About Sophie

I am a graduate of Reading University, where I studied for my Master's in Meteorology. I then spent several years as a research assistant in the USA, where I was fortunate enough to teach maths and science at the undergraduate level. After returning to the UK, I started in a local college, where I currently assess science apprentices and teach on a variety of different maths units. I have experience teaching a range of ages and abilities - I have taught Essential Skills, GCSE and A-Level maths to aspiring plumbers, electricians, engineers and chemists. I love working with students and have enjoyed building up a rapport with them that hopefully allows the maths to become that little bit easier!

About the lesson

Just like learning to play guitar, maths is a skill - we have to practice to improve. However, even the word "maths" is often enough to send children (and adults) into worry mode. Worry likes to tell us we can't do something, that the task is insurmountable, and this feeling is hard to overcome in a large classroom or sitting alone with a revision book. My approach to tutoring is intended to provide a friendly, non-judgemental space where we can discover what it is about maths that you struggle with, why you find it challenging, and how we can break down that barrier and use it to improve. If we remove the scary part, the confidence and results follow.

My relaxed approach is possible because of a plan, a plan discussed with the student and/or parent and agreed upon by all of us - because it takes work to build a skill! Each session will have a clear goal, determined ahead of time, which will allow us to see consistent progress as we move towards whatever test, exam or problem that motivates us. I typically begin with a few activities that allow me to gauge what level we are starting at, move into some teaching, before getting to those all important exam style questions and techniques.

The learning doesn't finish at the end of the session - I use an online system to track the progress of my students, which I encourage both students (through homework) and parents to be involved in.
