About Janella

Hi! My name is Janella, and I am a bilingual Spanish and English speaker currently pursuing my first year in a School Psychology PhD program at the University of Utah. I have extensive experience communicating, working, and teaching in both languages, including living and working in Spain where I used Spanish daily in professional, personal, and educational settings. This experience helped me develop strong conversational fluency, as well as a deep appreciation for cultural connection and communication.

I also have experience tutoring students of all ages, from young children to adults, and I enjoy adapting my teaching style to fit each student’s unique learning needs, goals, and interests. My background in psychology and education has strengthened my ability to create supportive, individualized learning environments where students feel comfortable building confidence and making progress at their own pace.

My teaching style is patient, conversational, and student-centered. I believe language learning should feel natural, engaging, and practical rather than stressful or overly rigid. I focus on helping students improve real-world communication skills through interactive conversation, vocabulary building, pronunciation practice, and personalized lessons based on topics that interest them.

About the lesson

I take a conversational, student-centered approach to teaching Spanish. My lessons are designed around each student’s interests, goals, and learning style so sessions feel engaging, practical, and personalized rather than overly structured. I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable speaking and making mistakes, so I focus on creating a supportive environment that builds confidence naturally.

A typical lesson includes conversation practice, vocabulary building, pronunciation support, and grammar integrated into real-life situations. I often let students guide the session based on topics they enjoy or areas where they want extra help, whether that’s travel Spanish, schoolwork, conversation skills, professional communication, or grammar review. I adapt the pace and structure depending on the student’s level and goals.

What sets me apart is my bilingual background, cultural understanding, and flexible teaching style. I focus on helping students communicate naturally and comfortably while making lessons interactive and enjoyable. I have experience working with diverse learners and tailoring instruction to individual needs.

My lessons are open to beginners through advanced learners, including children, teens, university students, and adults looking to improve conversational fluency, pronunciation, grammar, listening comprehension, or confidence speaking Spanish.
