About James

I have been a painter my whole life, educated at the prestigious Glasgow School of Art and then having a career in painting and tutoring. I have much personal success selling paintings and have learned how to reflect this onto my students. I teach students who are novices and want the knowledge of painting techniques in an environment which is relaxed and comfortable. I tutor students who wish to gain entry for Art school with portfolio classes. For the professional artist, I teach rarely known techniques which can be incorporated into the artist's practice, along with advice on how to increase sales of paintings and artistic profile in the world of galleries and selling. I tutor art sessions for multiple students or for singular students with classes up to 15 students at a one or two-hour session. I accommodate students with a variety of issues that might impinge on them from taking part in an art class. I tutor mental health classes whether in the studio, outreach or online. I give demonstrations about many different ways of painting and inform the viewer with step-by-step dictation while executing the painting or drawing. Whether it's a fun session or a serious intense class, the student will leave the session content from the class.

About the lesson

I teach from the academic techniques of Rembrandt and old masters to contemporary abstract painting and drawing and the importance of the use of sketchbooks in art. The art lessons can be in a one-hour or a two-hour session and will finish with a mini critique on the lesson of learning that day. At the end of the programme, the student will confidently be able to paint at a superior level done with both knowledge and techniques learned. I will show you how to couple these skills with your own to produce a distinctive style of your own which will make you stand out from the crowd.

I supply all materials and also give education into making substitute oils and tools using everyday things, instead of buying expensive art shop goods. This serves for the rest of your life; instead of buying expensive overpriced art materials, you can make your own. All tea and coffee, water provided. Any "get creative with wine night"s all food and wine supplied. If live model supplied it is in the overall price. No hidden costs.
