About Nicola
I have always been considered an outstanding, compassionate and enthusiastic teacher and the students I have worked with have made excellent progress. I have taught and tutored a wide range of students in a variety of settings, including working in a school for children with special educational needs. I have experience teaching Key Stage 3 and 4 (both English Language and Literature) and I have helped young people with anxiety and autism. I have also tutored an adult with dyslexia, who needed to resit their GCSEs; they improved by two grades.
In addition, I have been an examiner for AQA, so I have a deep understanding of exam specifications and how to apply the necessary skills to reach grades 8 and 9. I have assisted students taking exams with WJEC and OCR as well, so I can adapt to your needs accordingly.
I think it's really important to always be learning something new, or stretching yourself, no matter how old you are. As well as teaching and tutoring, I love to write. I'm in the middle of writing a dystopian novel at the moment. I find great joy in writing for myself, but I'd love to get published one day!

Whether you require guidance with grammar, or exam skill expertise, I can personalise sessions to suit any student. My approach is flexible and is centred around finding the most appropriate path to suit each individual. I have a range of strategies to help overcome any kind of barrier to learning.
The most important aspect of tutoring is to quickly identify key gaps in knowledge and skills that the student finds most challenging, such as planning for creative writing, or close text analysis. During an initial free session, I will be able to determine exactly what these needs are (parents are obviously welcome to attend this). Afterwards I will use suitable scaffolding and practice exam papers (for GCSE students) to encourage confidence, build skills and develop independence.
