About Shaun

Although I firmly believe that students always learn best when they are having fun and enjoying themselves, my approach is at all times entirely professional. In our first class, I will assess your needs and learning style. The materials I use next will be based on that, and carefully prepared in advance. My many years of experience in this job mean I know what it takes for students to pass exams and improve their English, sometimes extremely quickly. I can usually tell any student's level within 15 or, at most, 30 minutes of speaking with them. But I also know that every student is different; every learner has different needs. I keep a completely open mind about what will work best and always listen to feedback, which I encourage from students and parents alike. As a native English speaker brought up in north-west London, I have a classical 'received pronunciation' spoken voice and teach my students how to intone, pronounce and speak correctly. When it comes to writing, my having been an academic editor for the last 15 years gives me great expertise in working interactively with students through Google Docs to guide and improve their work. I always give simple, easy to follow advice which makes all the difference in those all-important exams. My number one skill as a teacher, though, is the empathy and understanding I build with students: motivating and driving them on towards success by building their self-belief and showing that yes, they CAN do it!

I've been teaching English full-time for 15 years, almost entirely online. I use a variety of highly interactive, video-based methods; I don't use books much because I find them boring and outdated. My goal as a teacher is always to provoke your thoughts and creative abilities; and above all, to have fun. A happy student is a good student! I hold Master's and Bachelor's degrees from two prestigious British universities, as well as studying for some years at Oxford University. I also hold a Trinity College, London TESOL teaching qualification. I have very extensive experience successfully preparing hundreds of students for: - B2 First Certificate (FCE) - C2 Cambridge Proficiency (CPE) - C1 Cambridge Advanced (CAE) - International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - International Baccalaureate (IB) I've also guided many students' applications to study in the UK, whether at a university or language institute. In addition, I've helped various students secure vital funding for their studies through, for example, Chevening scholarships. But that's not all I offer. I also teach conversation classes, where we can talk about anything you want and I'll correct and improve your pronunciation, fluency, and listening skills; and I teach Business English to many adults. As well as English, I also teach History at GCSE, A Level, IB and university level; and Politics at A Level, IB and undergraduate level. My academic background is in those areas. The most important things you can bring to class with me are: - An open mind - A sense of humour - A willingness to make mistakes (mistakes are good; no one who has ever learnt anything important did so without making many mistakes along the way) - A reliable internet connection I will provide you with all the materials we need: videos, past exams, pictures, or articles. My students always tell me how much fun I am to work with. Some teachers can be quite authoritarian and old-fashioned. I'm not like that in any way, and promise that classes with me will be enjoyable and rewarding. One other thing: I also love football! So if you want to talk about that, I'm sure I'm the teacher for you. All classes are online only. I teach all ages 13 and upwards, intermediate level and upwards. Classes can be 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 50 minutes or 60 minutes in length. It depends entirely on what suits you, your needs and budget. The first class is free.
