Find out more about Wandisa

  • When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

My passion for mathematics, physics, and chemistry began to bloom during my own school days. I vividly remember those moments when I first grasped the elegance of a mathematical equation, the thrill of conducting a science experiment, or the wonder of understanding the fundamental laws of physics. As for tutoring, it was a natural extension of my love for these subjects. I found joy in sharing my knowledge and helping others navigate through the complexities, just as my own mentors had done for me.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less)?

The subjects I teach are not just about formulas and equations; they are pathways to understanding the world around us. I love delving into the beauty of mathematics, the awe-inspiring principles of physics, and the intricate workings of chemistry. I enjoy discussing topics that students find challenging, breaking them down into simpler concepts, and witnessing that "aha" moment when everything clicks. While there may be topics that students struggle with more, I see them as opportunities for growth and deeper understanding.
  • Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you?

Absolutely, I've been fortunate to have inspiring teachers who ignited my passion for learning. One in particular stands out—a mathematics teacher who not only taught the subject but also showed genuine care for each student's understanding and growth. Their dedication and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on me, shaping my approach to teaching today.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good tutor, one must possess not only a deep understanding of the subject matter but also empathy, patience, and adaptability. Empathy allows me to connect with students on a personal level, understanding their individual struggles and learning styles. Patience is essential in guiding students through challenges, allowing them to learn at their own pace. Adaptability enables me to tailor my teaching methods to suit each student's needs, ensuring effective communication and comprehension.
  • Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your student days?

There was a student I once tutored who was struggling with algebra. No matter how many times we went over the concepts, they just couldn't seem to grasp it. Instead of growing frustrated, I decided to approach the topic from a different angle. We incorporated visual aids, real-world examples, and interactive activities. Suddenly, everything clicked for them, and they went from dreading algebra to eagerly tackling problems. It was a reminder of the power of perseverance and creativity in teaching.

  • Did you face any difficulties at school or university?

Like many students, I faced my share of difficulties during my academic journey. There were moments of self-doubt, challenges understanding complex concepts, and the pressure to excel. However, each obstacle served as a learning opportunity, shaping me into a more resilient and determined individual. These experiences allow me to empathize with my students and support them through their own struggles.

  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

My passion lies in both teaching and the subject matter itself. There's something deeply fulfilling about witnessing the moment a student's eyes light up with understanding, knowing that I played a part in their academic journey. However, my passion extends beyond the classroom as well. I find joy in exploring the connections between different disciplines, finding patterns in the world around us, and continuously seeking knowledge and growth.
