About Imogen

Hi! I’m Immy :)

I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Animal Science at uni, with the goal of getting into Veterinary Bioscience and eventually becoming a vet. Animals are basically my entire personality at this point I have plenty of my own, including dogs, a cat, snakes and a lizard, and I also work in animal care alongside uni. Part of my job involves educating people about animals, which I absolutely love.

I’ve always been super curious about how things work, especially anything to do with animals, biology and the natural world. I’m definitely the type of person who wants to know WHY something happens rather than just being told that it does.

School definitely hasn’t always come easily to me though. I have ADHD and spent a lot of my schooling thinking I just wasn’t an academic person or that I wasn’t as smart as everyone else. It took me a long time to realize that I could learn, I just needed to figure out how MY brain learns.

Since starting uni, I’ve completely changed how I approach studying and learning and managed to achieve a 7.0 GPA in my first semester, which is something younger me genuinely would never have believed.

That’s a huge part of why I want to tutor. I know what it feels like to WANT to understand something but just not get it when it’s explained the same way over and over again.

Whether your child absolutely loves science, is struggling with it, has ADHD or learns a little differently, or currently thinks science is the most boring subject ever, I’m happy to meet them where they’re at.

I’m super patient, pretty hard to embarrass and completely fine with being asked the same question 10 times. I love finding random examples, drawing things out and connecting what we’re learning to things the student actually cares about.

More than anything, I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, getting things wrong and being curious. I want them to realize that struggling with something doesn’t mean they’re bad at it, sometimes you just need someone to explain it in a way that actually works for you :)

About the lesson

Science doesn’t have to mean sitting down and memorising a million facts from a textbook!

My lessons are tailored to the individual student, their age, what they’re learning at school and (most importantly!) how they actually learn best. I’m happy to help students anywhere from Reception through to Year 10, whether that means making science fun and exciting for a younger student or helping an older student finally wrap their head around a topic they’ve been stuck on.

I also have ADHD myself, so my lessons are very ADHD-friendly. I know that “just concentrate” isn’t particularly helpful! I’m more than happy to break things into smaller chunks, switch activities when attention starts disappearing, use diagrams and visual explanations, come up with weird analogies, or explain the same thing five different ways until we find the one that clicks.

There’s no expectation to already be “good at science” before you come to me. Getting confused, asking a million questions and getting things wrong is part of learning!

My goal is for students to leave a lesson understanding a little more, feeling a little more confident, and hopefully thinking science is actually pretty cool :)
