About Luísa

My name is Luisa and I am an 18 year old student studying History at Durham University. I am originally from Brazil, but have moved to different countries my whole life - from the US, to Colombia, to Brazil, to France and finally, to the UK. I speak English, French and Portuguese fluently. I understand how much of a barrier language can be when trying to fit into different environments, and have a passion for helping people feel connected through language. I am still learning more languages myself, such as Spanish and German. French holds a special place in my heart, as I not only went to mainly French schools, but also because I grew up predominantly in Paris. When learning English, I noticed that the teachers who made a difference were the ones who paid attention to me as an individual, and tailored to my personal needs, instead of the ones who adopted a standardised approach.

I completed my IB Diploma during lockdown, so I am familiarised with online learning. During the IB, I also informally tutored many peers for different subjects, which made me discover a passion for teaching.

About the lesson

I have tutored peers in school, some who had great difficulties with the subject and some who just needed a little push. I found that, unsurprisingly, everyone learns differently and needs to adopt a different approach to best learn. In a big classroom, it is common for teachers to apply a one-size fits all approach - which often does not work. This is why I want to give lessons, 1h per session, not only teaching the student but mentoring them.

I strive to get to the students them, assess how they learn, how their mind works, and explore different methods that will help them learn - whether that be exploring their photographic memory, creating games, through memorisation, through writing or auditory methods, and many more ways. I want to get to know the student, not just as a 'student' but as an individual with specific needs.

The ages I teach range from 14-18 years old - whether it be for their GCSEs, A-Levels, or other.
