About Eleanor

I am Eleanor Ross, a private French tutor with over 15 years of experience working with students of all ages, from early years to adult learners. I am passionate about teaching and believe that learning a language opens up new perspectives and enriches our understanding of the world.

I grew up in London and am an English native speaker however, spent parts of my childhood and early adulthood living in France. Over the years I developed a deep connection with the language and culture. I pursued French studies at the University of London, where I eventually completed a postgraduate Masters degree.

I am a professional and a mother of two teenage boys, residing in East London. I offer both face-to-face and online sessions via Zoom/Teams, providing flexibility to accommodate different preferences and situations.

Over the years, I have had the privilege of helping to ‘re-inspire’ many students who had become disillusioned with traditional methods of language learning. My passion for the French language can sometimes be contagious! I am proud to have helped students reignite their enthusiasm for language learning.

I strongly believe that the languages we speak and understand shape our perception of culture, society, and the world around us. Proficiency in a second or additional language enhances cross-cultural understanding, intellectual capacity, and offers us alternative perspectives. It enriches us in multiple ways.

In addition to my private tutoring, I have extensive experience in the field of education. I have worked inside classrooms in support roles, organized summer schemes and workshops, worked with local authorities in the Education Directorate and Strategic Partnerships, and served as a School Governor for over 5 years. These experiences have further enriched my understanding of education and diverse learning needs.

I am fully aware of safeguarding and health and safety requirements when working with children and young people, prioritizing their well-being at all times. References are available upon request to provide assurance of my professionalism and commitment to the safety of my students.

I specialize in working with small groups and one-to-one sessions for students in Early Years, KS1-4, FE/HE, and adult learners. I have experience and enjoy working with students who have special educational needs (SEND), social, emotional, and mental health challenges (SEMH), and neurodivergence. I believe in creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all my students.

When starting with a new student, I begin with an initial chat with the student and/or their parents/guardians to understand their goals, background in language learning, and interests. This helps me tailor vibrant, dynamic, and enjoyable sessions using multimedia and alternative techniques.

I have extensive knowledge of the National Curriculum and examining body requirements, allowing me to support students in exam preparation while maintaining my personal approach of student-led, dynamic sessions. My goal is to equip students with the tools to facilitate their own language learning, as well as the confidence and inspiration to enjoy and further pursue their learning.

No two sessions are ever the same! I enjoy immersing students into the French speaking world. Depending on the age, interests and objectives of the student we may find ourselves….singing songs, listening to music, watching excerpts of classic films, reading poetry or parts of classic novels, reading the newspapers or magazines, discussing current affairs or history, acting out role plays, playing board games or computer games- even watching and commentating on french football matches!

Sessions are geared towards developing reading, writing and listening skills as well as offering an insight and appreciation of French and Francophone culture, history and society.

Apart from French, I also offer sessions in History, History of Art, and Philosophy. If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to reach out for a chat about your specific requirements.

*A concessionary rate is available for people in receipt of certain government benefits or on low incomes, and I provide a reduced fee for taster sessions, allowing potential students to experience my teaching style and approach.
