About Healthylife

My name is Madame Toby, and I have been speaking French since birth as my mother is from the Le Vésinet region of France which is a suburb of Paris. My mother immigrated to the USA to marry my dad who is from East TN. This is why I like to call myself the Frappalachian, half French, half Appalachian. I also claimed dual citizenship with France and the USA when I turned 21. I have taught French for almost 20 years in the K12 classroom, but I have spoken French my entire life. I enjoy helping people learn a new language because you learn more than just vocabulary words! You learn how culture and language across the world influence each other as well as a society. Learning another language enhances your knowledge of your own language and strengthens your higher order thinking skills which can benefit you no matter what you are studying.

About the lesson

Meet students where they are by establishing prior knowledge.
Once I understand the students' needs and establish a baseline of French content knowledge, I can create dynamic, fun, interactive lessons that will build their comprehension and retention of the French language.

Communicative style to language learning with multiple approaches: cultural, reading, writing, listening to enhance retention and comprehension.

As a retired classroom teacher, I have access and am comfortable using a variety of resources in order to help students achieve their learning goals in the French language.

As someone who grew up speaking both French and English, I have a unique understanding of each language in order to support those learning French to make connections between their native language and the target language.

Lessons are for high school or college students who need help in understanding grammatical, contextual, and linguistic concepts in the French language.

I also use my understanding of brain development to help students become more self-aware of their own learning.
