In my combined 12 years of studying and teaching art and design at foundation, undergraduate and master's level, I have developed a number of tenets around its effective tuition. I believe the most important two are: 1) To hold space for your creative expression and development 2) To support you in presenting your work in the most authentic way whilst also ensuring clarity and professionalism in its display It is these two things that empower you to share your work with confidence, whether for a portfolio, exhibition, website or any other physical or digital form required. I believe it's important to balance integrity with practicality, as ultimately, it can be difficult to ascertain whether your work is communicating what you intend it to, particularly when it comes to the cohesion of a portfolio or website. You can consider me an encouraging yet discerning second pair of eyes, whose comments and questions will help guide you in improving your skills in both practice and presentation, making decisions and editing your work, and articulating your ideas and visions with eloquence and charisma. Lessons work best between 30 and 90 minutes, and when you bring visual examples of your work (in progress as well as finished pieces!) ready to review, critique, and prep for presentation. I can offer expertise on the following: - portfolio preparation for university, foundation, and more - personal statements and written commentaries (from getting started, bullet points and mind-mapping, through to structuring, proofreading and final drafts) - website and social media promotion of your creative work - presentations, pitches or applications for creative opportunities - interview prep and mock interviews (both good and bad cop!) - general creativity coaching, pep talks, or feedback tutorials - planning, daily routine, and organisation tips to work smart, not hard - spiritual tools and practices to support your goals I look forward to supporting you in taking the next step in your creative and professional journey.

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I have always immersed myself in creative activity. Whether drawing and painting as a child, learning piano and writing songs in my early teens, or feeling an affinity for creative and expressive writing initially through my teenage diaries, it's always been a compulsion of sorts. It's automatic. The decision to do an art foundation when I left school - as opposed to studying English Literature or Anthropology which were also favourites - was really because I didn't feel there was an alternative. The only thing that meant anything, that felt to add substance and depth to my story in this life on Earth, was to be immersed in creative activity and contribute that to the tapestry of culture. There was no alternative.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

Artists whose work seems to be a vital aspect of their human experience, philosophy, and connection to others. Artists who plumb the depths and respond to the times. Artists who find themselves exploring the space between disciplines.
Some favourites include Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, Andrea Zittel, Edvard Munch, Frida Kahlo, Chris Kraus, Nam Jun Paik, Bas Jan Ader, Agnes Pelton, Agnes Martin, Hilma Af Klint, John Smith, Andrei Tarkovsky, Sally Mann, Isaac Julien, Evan Ifekoya, Pilvi Takala, Luigi Rossolo, JMW Turner, JAM Whistler, Gillian Wearing, Claude Cahun, Arthur Hacker, Bjork, Pipilotti Rist, Tom Hunter, Jonas Mekas, Olafur Eliason studio, Neri Oxman, John Giorno, Carolee Schneeman, Harp & Silver, Anna Biller, Paul Clipson, Tacita Dean.. and so many popstars and musicians too!
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

An almost singular commitment to practice and prioritise that. Obviously there needs to be a balance an it's a balance many struggle with, in terms of interpersonal connections and earning a living, but there's a sort of unconditional force or momentum that seeps through even when one is 'busy' with other things, when one tries not to do the creative things. Skills.. besides one's craft(s), a willingness to embrace the unknown, enjoy the process, and learn some basics about marketing, networking, and self-promotion seem super important in today's landscape as no one is going to come to you. This is also where that singular commitment and connection to one's own practice is important, as I don't see how it's possible to sustain working and sharing if you don't have that.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Find a way to do some little and often. You can't be a perfectionist about only starting or gaining momentum with something if you have the ideal conditions or timeframe. Life is happening NOW. Find a way to show up regularly and eke away at things. Be resourceful and use the means that you have to make what you can. And try to do one or few things at a time as otherwise it's overwhelming and everything remains unfinished! That's one of my problems anyway.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

Alive! Free. It makes me feel necessary.
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

Having my book, overlove, published in 2018 was a highlight, and the web series I produced from it which was a bit of a lo-fi epic on zero budget. Having my work Smile 2020 shown on Piccadilly Circus big screen in London. And producing and sharing my music and albums after being blocked with and suppressive of this for many years.
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Absolutely, constantly. I am always amazed by my students' unique approaches, thought processes, resourcefulness, initiative, and visions. It is so precious to hold space for their creativity, I learn so much. To underline the uniqueness, the way that different individuals respond to similar things always astounds me, especially when it comes to more prescriptive tasks or projects.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

Listening! I strongly believe in the importance of active listening, offering prompts or question when necessary, affirming or clarifying what they've shared, but mostly allowing the student to articulate their ideas and processes in their own words. And knowing when to offer (helpful) critical feedback or when to encourage and empower with more compassion. That also comes down to listening what the student needs in that moment. Lastly, my capacity to balance more general support with really practical and specific follow-up actions has been remarked upon a lot.
