About Keith
I have a colorful and varied professional history, which allows me the flexibility to connect on various levels with a wide array of students and interests. For the past two years, I taught intermediate undergraduate writing at the University of Utah to students in all majors. I also hold a Master of Arts in the Environmental Humanities, which is a writing-intensive, cross-disciplinary field focusing on environmental issues from a historical, literary, and philosophical perspective. I got my BA in English Literature from McGill. In addition, I have several years of experience in the technology sector. This diversity of experience lets me approach teaching with an open mind, and gives me the tools not only to teach academic English effectively, but to better understand where students of different backgrounds and abilities are coming from.

I teach academic spoken and written English for all ages and all subjects. My teaching methodology is student-centered. Every student is different, and I tailor classes accordingly. After assessing a student's needs, I design a curriculum that focuses on areas in need of improvement, and that also highlights students' strengths. My ultimate aim is not just to teach good academic English, but to empower students to express themselves and communicate more effectively.
For example, in a writing course, rather than simply tell a student what I think is right and wrong (though there will be a bit of that), I prefer to "workshop" the material. By working together on a given project, the student becomes an active part of the learning process, rather than a passive receptacle.
Learning to write and speak well in any language is a long and very personal process. By attending carefully to students' needs, I aim to facilitate students' intellectual growth.
