About Sheila

I am originally from Washington, DC. I attended George Mason University in Virginia where I earned a Bachelor’s in French Literature (B.A.) and a Master’s in Education (M.Ed.) in Secondary School Education with a specialty in Bilingual/ESL Education and a TESL (Teaching of English as a Second Language) Certificate. I also received a Special Education Certificate with that degree, allowing me to teach children from 11-22 years old in ESL/Special Education. I specialized in Literacy and Reading Disorders. Finally, I did my doctoral work (Ph.D.) at the University of Virginia in Education Research. I taught in the District of Columbia Public Schools (Washington, DC) and in the Fairfax County (Virginia) Public Schools. I also taught at seven universities: Northern VA Community College; University of Virginia; American University; The George Washington University; The University of Maryland-College Park; Frostburg State University; and West Virginia University. I also did research at Howard University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Finally, I have worked for the United States Government at the US Department of Education making national policy for English Language Learners.

About the lesson

If you’re looking for a kind, funny, and caring teacher who makes learning English enjoyable, I’m your girl! I am a real professor of English as a Second Language who has not only taught students learning English all over the world, I spent 22 years teaching English Teachers in the US and the UAE. I am a researcher in Education, and I understand language and standardized tests very well, as I have studied Linguistics and language origins, as well as designed and written several standardized tests for large corporations. If I am your Teacher, not only will you learn English, you’ll learn WHY English is different than your language and HOW you can remember when/how to use it correctly. You will also learn the LOGIC of English language tests and how to PASS them. I welcome ALL students, but specialize in French, Spanish and Arabic speakers. Let’s laugh and learn English—All levels welcome.
