About Zain

I have always believed that nobody is naturally "bad at maths"—they have just had the bad luck of encountering a complex concept explained poorly early on.

My journey with mathematics started through my passion for Economics and Finance. After graduating with an Economics degree from the University of Manchester, I wanted to combine my love for analytical thinking with my passion for education. This led me to pursue professional teaching credentials and spend the last two years working as a university-level lecturer abroad.

Now, as I return to Manchester to complete my Master’s in Finance at Alliance Manchester Business School, I am dedicated to helping the next generation of students conquer their GCSE Maths hurdles.

Why I Focus on GCSE Maths

GCSE is the ultimate crossroads for a student. It is the moment where mathematics shifts from basic arithmetic to abstract, logical problem-solving. If a student falls behind here, "maths anxiety" kicks in, and they shut down.

Because of my background in economics and finance, I don't view maths as a stagnant list of equations to memorise for an exam paper. I see it as a powerful tool for logical reasoning. My goal as a tutor is to pull back the curtain on how numbers work, demystify the exam structure, and build the genuine confidence a student needs to handle any question thrown at them.

My Approach Beyond the Textbook

Having worked extensively with educational charities like The Tutor Trust and international schools like EF, I understand that every student learns differently. I pride myself on being patient, highly structured, and deeply encouraging.

Whether your child is struggling to secure a passing grade or aiming to unlock a Grade 9 for their A-Level transitions, I tailor my mentorship to their pace. I bring the same professional standard, rigorous lesson preparation, and clarity to my GCSE sessions that I brought to my university lecture halls.

When I’m not diving into financial modelling or tutoring, you can usually find me watching football, keeping up with macroeconomic trends, or exploring the Manchester food scene.

Hi, I'm Zain.

As a former university lecturer, University of Manchester Economics graduate, and MSc Finance candidate at Alliance Manchester Business School, I offer a rare combination for GCSE Maths tutoring: top-tier quantitative expertise combined with professional, university-level teaching experience.

Here is exactly what you can expect from my lessons:

• Teaching Methodology & Techniques

I do not just sit back and watch students do worksheets. Because I am a professionally trained educator with international university-level experience, my approach is active, structured, and highly psychological.

The "Scaffolding" Method: I break down intimidating mathematical formulae (like quadratic equations or circle theorems) into micro-steps. We master the baseline logic before layering on the complexity.

Concept-Check Questioning: Instead of asking "Does that make sense?" (to which students always say yes), I use targeted diagnostic questions to verify they actually understand the underlying mechanics.
Exam-Specific Strategy: Knowledge is only half the battle. I teach students how to read GCSE exam papers, unpack what the question is *actually* asking, and structure their working out to guarantee maximum method marks.
The Mouse-Free/Active Mindset: Borrowing from high-level financial training, I teach students to think efficiently and build genuine numerical intuition rather than just memorising steps for a test.

• Typical Length of a Lesson

60 Minutes (Standard): This is the optimal window for maximum focus without cognitive fatigue.
The Structure of a Class:
First 10 mins: High-impact review of previous concepts (Active Recall).
Next 25 mins: Introducing the new topic and live interactive modelling.
Next 20 mins: Guided practice using real past GCSE exam questions.
Final 5 mins: Wrap-up, error logging, and setting independent targeted practice.

Qualifications & Experience

BSc in Economics from the University of Manchester.
MSc Finance Candidate at Alliance Manchester Business School (AMBS).
Professional Teaching Credentials: Fully certified by Cambridge (CELTA).
University-Level Track Record: I have spent the last two years teaching at university level abroad, designing curriculum materials, and refining how to deliver complex academic concepts clearly to diverse student groups. I have extensive UK tutoring experience, including teaching at EF School in Manchester and serving as a specialised Mathematics tutor for The Tutor Trust.

Who the Lessons Are For

I specialise strictly in GCSE Mathematics (AQA, Edexcel, and OCR examination boards). My students typically fall into two categories:

1. The Confidence Builders: Students in Year 9, 10, or 11 who feel overwhelmed by maths, have developed "maths anxiety," and need a patient, structured mentor to reset their foundations and get them back on track for a solid pass or higher.
2. The High-Achievers: Students aiming for top marks (Grades 7, 8, or 9) who need an elite-level analytical mentor to challenge them with complex multi-step problem solving and perfect their exam technique.
