About Cristina

I am a former teacher of 20 years experience with elementary school age children. I spent 16 years as a special education teacher so I have expertise in differentiation and scaffolding instruction to ensure student success. I have a Master's degree in Special Education as well as a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. Additionally I have received my certification in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

My approach as a tutor relies on flexibility, patience, and the provision of personalized attention that accommodates the unique learning style and needs of each student. - **Active Engagement**: I am an active learner where I encourage questioning, further investigation of concepts, and the application of whatever is being learned. Passive memorization is discouraged while there is a focus on understanding the "why" and "how" of concepts. - **Individualized Lessons**: I believe that every person learns differently, so I adapt my teaching styles. If the student is a visual learner, I may utilize diagrams, images, or color-coded notes. If they are a practice learner, I'll prepare exercises and problems that will reinforce the subject. - **Simplifying Complicated Concepts**: If a concept seems daunting, I simplify it into smaller, more digestible parts. By slowly working up from fundamentals, students build confidence and the capacity for applying knowledge without being hurried. - **Real-World Connections**: I often connect theoretical content to real-world examples, showing students how what they're learning can be applied outside of the classroom. This engages them and makes abstract concepts seem more relevant. - **Feedback and Encouragement**: I provide constant, constructive feedback. I don't just point out mistakes but also explain how to correct them and why the correct approach is better. Positive reinforcement is crucial in maintaining motivation levels, especially when the material gets difficult.
