About Jerrod
Before I started down the path to learning Portuguese, I learned Spanish and became fluent in it back in high school. I started learning Spanish my freshman year and went from knowing nothing to being fluent in one year through arduous immersion that I, personally, took the initiative to do. Once I decided that I really wanted to learn Portuguese, I was in a position where I did not have a formal teacher nor the money to afford one nor pay for a course to learn it. So, what did I do? I recalled the four aspects of language that I needed to attain fluency in Spanish: reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension. Every single day, I practiced each one of these language domains and continued to refine them. I went over basic grammar structures to more advanced ones, read them, wrote them and spoke them every single day with my Brazilian best friend, Gabriel, and his roommates to constantly refine and evolve my fluency and understanding of the language until, one day, my Brazilian mom-in-law complimented me and told me I was fluent in Portuguese! (At this point, I was two years into my diligent study). So, it is with this tenacity and experience that I attained fluency and will work with YOU to help you achieve your individual goals. The first meeting we have will be more of an evaluation of your current skill level and for me to get to know more about your goals and motivations. From there, I will help you to fortify the areas you are weak in and will also give you homework after each session to reinforce the concepts we worked on in-session!
Throughout our sessions, we will continuously strengthen the tenets that exist in every language: reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension. Feel free to make mistakes--this is a safe environment--but I ask that you be willing to learn from those mistakes and that you focus your energy on just improvement! I excel in demystifying complicated concepts and breaking them down into easy-to-understand concepts, so we got this!
I am open to working with all levels, be you a beginner who is just getting their feet wet all the way to someone who is more advanced and needs to work on the more technical aspects of the language.
