About Nicholas

My name is Nicholas Graber and I am a 24 year-old living in Los Angeles. I went to UCSD, and am now working as a Production Underwriter for commercial insurance.

My history with french is an interesting one: I actually decided to learn french because my (now ex)girlfriend was french, and I decided I wanted to learn for her. I ordered a french textbook from amazon and started to teach myself (with the help of my girlfriend of course). Initially, I was just hoping to become conversational, but I ended up becoming incredibly passionate, and I fell in love with the language and the world that opens up as you learn another language. I watched youtube videos, movies, and tv in french, along with reading some novels like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. After having made many french friends and immersing myself in the language, I decided to take the DELF B2 test for fun, and to see how I would test, and with little studying I passed with a score of 90 (a score of 50 is required to pass).

Because I am kind of self-taught (though my ex-girlfriend and french friends certainly helped me along the way), I have intimate knowledge of what it's like to learn a language as a grown-up and I am very familiar with the unique challenges that it poses to learn a language as a grown-up as opposed to being exposed from childhood. I remain very passionate about french and would love to help anyone else who is hoping to learn the language themselves. I know how impossible it can feel to become fluent in a language, and I would love to show people how possible it can be.

Depending on your current level (A1, A2, B1, B2, etc.), I would focus on whatever areas that you would like to see the most improvement in (whether that be speaking, listening, reading, etc.) I would help by teaching you the methods that I learned were the best through my own trial and error. We would work on practice conversations about diverse topics, we would watch bits of french media and I will help improve understanding by breaking down what they're saying, and if desired I would teach the slang that helps you sound more like a native.

Grammar is something that people tend to struggle with the most, and yet it is very important to becoming more comfortable speaking and understanding. I really want to make sure that my students feel comfortble constructing their own sentences, and I'll help them do this by ensuring they have a good understanding of the grammar. In other words it's not simply repeating sentences I teach them, it's understanding exactly why we are saying the words that we're saying.

To sum up, I'm very adaptable, and will try to cater my lessons to my student's goals and learning style. I can help people looking to improve their french grades for school, those looking to pass a DELF test (having passed the DELF B2 test myself), or those who simply want to try to learn french for fun.
