About Ciara

For as long as I can remember, I have loved English. My passion and dedication to the subject has only strengthened over the course of my academic career. Fiction was always my safe-haven, but as I grew so did the many challenges it presented. Stories are the way that we connect with one another and build bridges across divides that can seem too great to overcome. One of my favourite quotes by Salman Rushdie says that 'language is courage' and I would like to think that one day I can help my students to find the courage to cross that divide, just as someone once helped me. Studying English not only provides young people with the basic written and oral communication skills that are so necessary to succeed in life, it allows them to find their own voice, to speak with clarity and precision when discussing topics that are important to them, and the opportunity and confidence to address any audience, regardless of their own background. Language creates meaning, and having command of it allows students to understand and shape the world around them for better. Now more than ever, it's important that we equip our students with the skills and qualifications they need to flourish in their chosen career paths. English provides a necessary foundation for their continued success after school. It's our job to lay that foundation.

About the lesson

I am a Teach First trainee, teaching English at secondary level. I have been tutoring Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 students in English for two years. I graduated from the University of Manchester with a First in BA English. I have experience working with a range of children of all different abilities, including those with special educational needs and disabilities. I provide personalised support for individuals who are struggling with English. I can help them to understand what areas they need to improve in whether this be essay writing, structure, language, spelling or grammar. My work with the student will depend on their level and I adjust my teaching style to suit their needs. If I feel the student needs additional practice I can also set homework. I offer the support and encouragement necessary to help my students grow in confidence and improve their grades, but I expect hard work and dedication in return.

Ciara is a good friend of mine who assists me with editing my written work. She has a natural knack for writing and is critically minded. (She achieved a 1st in her English degree at a prestigious university!) She is well read, extremely intelligent and able to put forward a well-rounded and thoughtful argument in her work. Her teaching style is patient and empathetic to the student's needs. I know that from her work as a teaching assistant, she approaches each student as an individual and uses methods that will suit them. As she is a supportive friend, I believe she will also be a supportive Superprof!
