About Ashley

With over 20 years of experience as a fine artist, photographer, and creative director, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to every lesson. A graduate of the School of Visual Arts in New York City (BFA, 2005), my work has been featured in exhibitions worldwide, including my debut solo show, Devastatingly Good Times, at The Nowhere Gallery of Contemporary Art in Milan, Basel, LACE, Center for Civil and Human Rights, Studio Museum in Harlem, and more. Growing up surrounded by the creative energy of music and photography, I developed a deep passion for the arts at an early age. This unique upbringing, paired with decades of professional experience in fine art, editorial photography, and video production, allows me to bring a multidimensional perspective to teaching. My students not only learn technical skills but are also inspired to develop their artistic voice and confidence. I approach teaching with professionalism, creativity, and a genuine passion for helping students succeed. Whether you're a beginner eager to learn the fundamentals or an advanced artist looking to refine your craft, I am committed to providing personalized guidance in a supportive and engaging environment.

My Teaching Method and Techniques

My teaching method focuses on building a strong foundation in technique while encouraging creativity and individuality. I blend hands-on practice with in-depth discussions about art history, lighting, and composition. My approach is both structured and adaptable, ensuring that each student’s unique artistic voice is nurtured. I guide students through critiques that emphasize constructive feedback, empowering them to refine their skills and explore new ideas.

A Typical Lesson Plan

A typical lesson begins with a review of the student's previous work or assignments, followed by a brief discussion on a specific technique, concept, or historical reference. For example, we might study lighting techniques used by legendary photographers or analyze the storytelling elements in fine art. Students then work on hands-on projects—whether it's shooting a still-life, practicing portrait lighting, or creating a self-portrait tableau vivant—while receiving real-time feedback. We end the session with a critique and set goals for the next lesson.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor

I bring over 20 years of experience as a fine artist, photographer, and creative director, combining technical expertise with a rich understanding of the creative industry. My unconventional and deeply personal approach to image-making stems from years of working on editorial shoots, fine art exhibitions, and commercial productions. Having been mentored by some of the best in the arts and entertainment industry, I know what it takes to succeed and how to inspire students to think outside the box. My lessons go beyond technical skills to encourage storytelling, individuality, and a connection to the art form.

Who the Lessons Are For

My lessons are tailored for high schoolers, college students, and adults at various levels—whether you're a beginner looking to learn the fundamentals of photography and fine art, or an advanced student seeking mentorship to refine your portfolio. Aspiring photographers, fine artists, creative directors, and anyone passionate about visual storytelling will benefit from my guidance.
