About Iona

I am currently an undergraduate mathematics student about to start my final year at University of St Andrews. I have always enjoyed maths but I have found that during my time at university, my love of the subject has grown greatly. My enjoyment of maths has also led me enjoying teaching it to others and helping them to enjoy and understand it more! With my added time studying the subject at university, I have found it easier to find new ways to explain tricky ideas.

In my sixth year at Secondary School, I thoroughly enjoyed peer tutoring in a second year maths class, a National 5 maths class and also with a first year general science class. Moreover, in my final year at university, I am taking a module in 'Communication and Teaching in Maths' which will help me to deliver the best quality of tutoring sessions. I also have experience of working with younger children; I have been a Leader at Girlguiding units for the past 9 years where I have worked with Rainbows and Brownie Guides.

About the lesson

I am a friendly person and I also love to help people! For maths, I like to teach using notes but mainly through worked examples, focusing on areas that the student wants to build their confidence in first, before moving on to other areas of the subject. I understand that different people prefer to learn in different ways and that one method may not work for everyone so I am very flexible and will change this basic structure to tailor my tutoring for a particular student. I am very patient, enthusiastic and I am also willing and happy to put in as much effort as it is needed to help the student understand a concept.
