About Daisy

My approach to teaching flute combines structured progression with the freedom to explore and express. Every student, regardless of age or experience level, begins by learning how to breathe efficiently, support sound with the diaphragm, and create resonance through correct embouchure shaping. These basics are reinforced with long-tone exercises and embouchure drills that train not only the muscles but the ears. I emphasize tone quality early on because I believe that a beautiful sound is the foundation of all great flute playing. From there, we move into scale work, articulation control, and rhythmic training—all tied to actual music whenever possible. Whether it’s through learning a classical étude, a folk melody, or a modern piece, students always apply what they practice in technical studies to their musical repertoire. I view music theory as a natural extension of performance, often analyzing a piece’s form or harmonic flow in tandem with interpretive decisions. I encourage creativity through improvisation, giving students simple prompts (like creating a melody from a scale or echoing short motifs) to strengthen their listening and expressive confidence. Lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, pace, and musical identity, with regular opportunities for performance—whether in formal recitals or informal studio sharings. One memorable teaching moment was guiding a student through preparing a multi-movement piece for her college audition: we focused on developing endurance, refining tempo control, and practicing intentional phrasing, and she was accepted with scholarship. I also use technology to enhance learning: video demonstrations, slow-down apps for tricky passages, and guided practice tracks for rhythm support. Above all, I want my students to leave each lesson feeling energized, empowered, and increasingly in control of their musical voice.

My teaching philosophy as a flute instructor is guided by the belief that music education should be both empowering and deeply personal. I strive to create a lesson environment where students feel safe to express themselves, curious enough to take creative risks, and motivated to develop technical excellence.

The flute, in its breath-driven beauty, offers students a rare opportunity to connect sound directly to emotion—and my goal is to help them build both the skills and the mindset to play with conviction and clarity. Every student I work with begins from a place of observation. I assess their posture, tone production, breath support, and musical temperament. From there, I create a lesson structure tailored to their learning style, experience level, and personal goals.

For beginners, I emphasize foundational skills: forming a flexible and relaxed embouchure, developing a supported and focused tone, and learning clean finger coordination through short-scale patterns and simple melodies. Intermediate and advanced students build on this foundation through nuanced work on vibrato, dynamic shaping, articulation variety, and extended technique when appropriate. Repertoire is a core component of learning, and I choose pieces that both support technical development and invite personal connection.

I rotate between standard flute works, études, and contemporary or cross-genre pieces to keep students engaged and exposed to a variety of styles. I also invite students to suggest music they’re passionate about—whether it's a jazz solo, anime theme, or a culturally significant melody. This co-curation builds investment and helps students see themselves reflected in their musical journey. I view theory and aural skills as essential components of musical fluency. Rather than treating them as separate subjects, I embed them into the lesson through melodic dictation, chord recognition, interval exercises, and compositional analysis.

These activities develop musical intuition and sharpen performance accuracy. I also introduce improvisation gradually, as it helps students step into their own musical creativity and overcome the fear of “getting it wrong.” Performance preparation is a significant part of my teaching with students who have auditions or public recitals. We focus on stage readiness, mental rehearsal, and how to manage nerves constructively. I often hold mini performances during lessons and use audio or video recordings as tools for reflection and improvement.

One of my students, who once struggled with severe performance anxiety, eventually performed a memorized solo at a state competition—her growth in both technique and self-confidence was one of the most fulfilling moments in my career. Outside of lessons, I leverage digital tools to support consistent, effective practice. I send personalized recordings and exercises, use practice tracking apps, and encourage students to record themselves for self-feedback.

I also assign listening homework to help develop their ear and expose them to different performance styles. My ultimate aim is not just to produce technically capable flutists, but thoughtful, emotionally connected musicians. Whether students continue on a professional path or simply play for personal enjoyment, I want them to leave my studio with a strong musical foundation, a resilient mindset, and a love for the flute that will last a lifetime.
