My Excel teaching is built on the observation that the difference between Excel users who struggle and those who are genuinely powerful is almost never the number of functions they know but whether they understand how Excel's calculation engine actually processes information. I teach the reference system — relative, absolute, and mixed references — as the fundamental building block of all formula construction, spending as much time as necessary on this concept until it is completely intuitive, because every VLOOKUP failure, every copied formula error, and every broken dynamic range ultimately traces back to reference misunderstanding. My approach to data modelling teaches the separation of raw data, calculation, and presentation as distinct layers that should never be mixed in the same cells, because this structural principle is what separates amateur spreadsheets that break from professional models that scale. I introduce dynamic array functions to all intermediate and above students because FILTER, SORT, UNIQUE, and the other dynamic array functions have fundamentally changed what is possible in Excel and students who are unaware of them are significantly less productive than those who use them routinely. My approach to VBA is always automation-first rather than feature-demonstration — students identify a specific task they currently do manually and we build the macro that eliminates it, because practical motivation produces far faster VBA learning than abstract capability demos. I run Excel auditing sessions where students bring their own existing spreadsheets for us to review and improve together, because applying learned principles to real work produces the deepest practical understanding. My teaching goal is a student who looks at a complex spreadsheet challenge and immediately knows how to approach it.
