About Adrienne

Hello! I am a French tutor with over 4 years of tutoring experience and more than 200 students taught. French is a language I care about deeply — for its precision, for its literary tradition, for the extraordinary range of cultures and contexts that knowing French provides access to — and I try to convey that depth of engagement to every student I work with. I teach GCSE and A-Level French for all major exam boards, conversational French for adults, business French, and DELF preparation. I cover all four skills comprehensively and with great attention to the specific demands of each assessment context. I am particularly known for the quality of my writing feedback, which is detailed enough to genuinely develop students' written French rather than just identifying errors without explaining how to avoid them. My lessons are conducted substantially in French for students who are ready for that level of immersion, because the communicative experience of operating in the target language — even imperfectly, even with support — produces a kind of fluency development that grammar exercises alone cannot match. I support students carefully through this immersion, ensuring it is productive rather than overwhelming, and the results in terms of speaking confidence and listening comprehension are consistently significant.

About the lesson

My approach to French teaching starts from the recognition that French, like all languages, is primarily a tool for communication — and that teaching it primarily as a system of rules to be memorized and reproduced in controlled conditions produces students who can pass examinations but cannot actually communicate with French speakers. I work against this tendency by making communication central to every lesson, using speaking and writing as the primary vehicles through which grammar and vocabulary are learned, practiced, and consolidated. I cover all levels of French from complete beginner through to A-Level and university preparation. For examination students, I provide detailed preparation for all assessed components, with particular attention to the elements that students typically find most demanding: the accuracy and sophistication of written French, the spontaneity and fluency of the speaking examination, and — at A-Level — the quality and argumentative depth of the essay component. I teach grammar carefully and thoroughly, but always in connection with its communicative function. I explain not just what a rule is but why it exists and what communicative purpose it serves, because students who understand why a rule works retain and apply it far more reliably than those who have simply memorized a pattern. Cultural knowledge and historical context are also integrated throughout my teaching, because understanding the French-speaking world makes the language feel worth learning and gives students far richer resources for their writing and speaking.
