About Carl David

Shwmae, I’m Carl and I’ve been teaching Welsh for over 25 years. My passion for the language has shaped my life and career—from earning my Honours Degree in Welsh to leading three Welsh departments in schools. Beyond the classroom, I’m deeply involved in Welsh arts and culture. I wrote the first Welsh musical to be staged in the Donald Gordon Theatre at the Wales Millennium Centre, have composed countless Welsh-language songs, and have written scripts for numerous Eisteddfodau. I’ve also conducted choirs and orchestras, with one of my proudest moments being the conductor of the Cancer Challenge Singers. During my time with them, I broadened their Welsh repertoire and was praised for how I taught non-Welsh speakers to sing the lyrics with confidence and authenticity. To date, they have raised nearly £1 million for cancer charities. My wife’s family are also deeply embedded in the Welsh music scene, so creativity, culture, and language are truly at the heart of my life. I want to teach you Welsh because it’s not just a subject—it’s a living, vibrant part of our heritage. Whether you want to chat confidently in everyday situations, pass your GCSE or A Level, or explore the richness of Welsh literature and song, I’ll guide you using proven strategies that build skill, fluency, and pride. For me, teaching Welsh is about more than grammar and vocabulary—it’s about connection, identity, and giving you the tools to carry our culture forward with confidence and joy.

About the lesson

My lessons are individually designed to suit each learner, whether the goal is confident conversational Welsh or mastering more advanced and complex language structures. I believe every student learns differently, so I adapt my teaching to their strengths, needs, and preferred pace. For beginners, I focus on building a strong foundation in pronunciation, essential vocabulary, and everyday phrases, using repetition, call-and-response exercises, and real-life role-play scenarios to make the language memorable and usable from day one. For intermediate and advanced learners, I incorporate structured grammar study, sentence transformation exercises, reading comprehension of authentic Welsh texts, and targeted writing tasks. I also use guided listening activities, conversation prompts, and situational dialogues to strengthen fluency and comprehension in a natural, engaging way. I integrate a range of linguistic strategies, including scaffolding to support complex structures, retrieval practice to reinforce long-term memory, and differentiated questioning to stretch learners’ thinking. My approach combines accuracy with confidence-building, ensuring students feel comfortable using Welsh in both formal and informal contexts. Every lesson includes opportunities for spoken interaction, personalised feedback, and practical application, so learners don’t just understand Welsh—they use it with ease and enjoyment.
