About Matilda
I am a PhD student at the University of Edinburgh studying ancient Roman history. I also hold two masters degrees (in Ancient History and in Classics) and an undergraduate degree in Ancient History and Classical Archaeology. Though my graduate research has focused primarily on Roman imperial history, I had an equal focus on both Greek and Roman history, art, and archaeology during my undergraduate studies, and I have worked as a course tutor on university-level modules that covered aspects of ancient Mediterranean history for five years. These tutorials and the opportunity to work with students were often the highlight of my week.
In my capacity as a course tutor, I led weekly discussion-based classes for first- and second-year students in Roman history (during the Republican and Imperial periods), ancient historiography (Greek and Roman), and historical themes and theories in the ancient world (covering topics like slavery, travel, coinage and currency, and imperialism). Having begun tutoring during COVID, I am experienced in teaching both im person and over digital platforms like Zoom and Teams. For each of the classes I ran over the past five years, I graded and provided feedback on midterm and final essays, and have therefore developed a keen eye for what makes an excellent piece of written work. I often worked one-on-one with students to develop essay plans, give advice on research approaches, and to go through their graded essays to work through a future plan for suggested areas of improvement.
My teaching experience has rendered me a dynamic and enthusiastic tutor. Through years of experience, I have developed the ethos that my teaching practice and approach must accommodate and cater to the learning requirements of my students. As a passionate lifelong learner, my goal is to work to make education as exciting to my students as it is to me by nurturing academic confidence, presenting information to students in a way that makes sense to them, and having empathy and patience around areas of difficulty for my students. Having worked with students with a range of learning difficulties and/or special needs (like Dyslexia, ADHD, and ASD) as well as with those struggling with anxiety or simply a lack of confidence in the subject material, I know the value of and have seen the payoff of student-oriented educational approaches.

I strive to cater to my students' needs, recognising that everyone learns differently. To that end, I have employed numerous methodologies in the past, working equally with visual and auditory aids. In historical lessons, I find it equally useful to explore topics thematically and to illustrate them with specific examples, and strive to make the key takeaways clear at the beginning - and end - of each lesson. Equally important, in my opinion, to the cold, hard facts presented in books, are the pieces of material evidence that can illustrate how, and why things happened!
In teaching paper-writing, I find it important to explain the basic building-blocks of a successful academic paper before delving into what can be done with language. I focus on explaining the best way to structure an essay, moving on to the creation of comprehensive essay plans that effectively argue a point based on good research. Grammatical notes and spelling errors, depending on the student in question, can be addressed whenever necessary (and in whatever depth necessary).

I’ve known Matilda Brown in all my five years as a student at The University of Edinburgh, and benefitted from her help for all of that time. As anyone who embarks on tutoring, she has a plethora of knowledge in the necessary fields, but her true strength comes from her conduct. She has an unique ability to make difficult subjects accessible through humour, which itself helps the student retain information which would otherwise be lost. On a personal level, I do not believe I would have reached my academic goals without her support and aid. English is not my native language, and when looking back at the essays and projects she’s helped me through, edited, and advised, I am certain I would never have reached a 1st on the amount of projects I have if it was not for her. Her advice is always succinct and clear, her organisation abilities unlike anyone else I know. In addition, her future goal, to herself teach and research at university as a professor, gives her motivation and professionalism I doubt can be found in any other candidate.
I have known Matilda for 2 years. She is the hardest and most dedicated person I have met. Her work ethic is brilliant and has encouraged my own to be better. I have been a captive audience member for a lecture she gave on the Severans in my Third year at University. Not only did Matilda make the lecture easy to digest with a planned hand out and a very confident speaking manner. She also welcomed questions and made time for me after the lecture to discuss an upcoming essay. Alongside this, Matilda edited my dissertation for me. Her feedback and grammar check of my work has undoubtedly affected the mark I received for it, in a massively positive manner. Not only is Matilda easy to get along with, but her personality also makes learning classics from her exciting. I would wholeheartedly advise anyone looking for a classics tutor to pick Matilda.
Matilda is incredibly proficient at writing, editing and proof-reading. The fact that she has helped me with coursework throughout my undergrad in English Literature and my MSc in Global Environmental Politics is testament to the fact that she has command over academic writing beyond the scope of her chosen field. I do, however, know that she is particularly talented at teaching Classics and Ancient History from the comments I have heard from her peers and professors after she has taken a class. Her talent is borne out of love for the subject; being passionate about the subject matter means she is relentlessly patient with her tutees, as she simply enjoys teaching and discussing Classics and Ancient History. Her love for the subject also means that she approaches topics in unique and interesting ways that will help anyone she is teaching improve their critical thinking skills.
I therefore highly recommend Matilda, confident that she will provide excellent and dedicated tutelage and make anyone feel comfortable enough to learn effectively with her guidance.Matilda is a winning combination of charming, caring and highly intelligent. She always gives the maximum effort and ensures that people fully understand a topic before continuing. Her knowledge of the classical world is excellent, both with more general history of the period and specialist topics such as the women of the Severan Dynasty and slavery under the Romans. Matilda always gives due process to both primary and secondary sources, providing one with a strong foundation and also an idea of how events or themes are interpreted by classicists today. For these reasons, I cannot recommend Matilda enough to anyone with a need to learn about the classical world.
