About Lillian

As an undergraduate at the University of British Columbia studying mathematics and statistics, I understand what it is like to encounter challenging mathematical concepts and develop new approaches to solving them. My university coursework has strengthened both my mathematical foundation and my appreciation for the different ways students can approach the same problem. I aim to create a patient and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing their own problem-solving strategies. I have experience tutoring students across a wide range of ages in mathematics, English, and other subjects, which has taught me how to adapt my teaching style to each student’s individual needs and learning pace.

About the lesson

Who my Lessons are for

- Elementary, middle school, and high school students looking for support in mathematics, including arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and introductory calculus.
- Lessons can be tailored to homework support, concept review, test preparation, or strengthening a student's overall mathematical foundation.

Teaching Method and Techniques

- Getting to know who the student is (strengths & weaknesses)
- Helping them understand the reasoning behind mathematical concepts rather than simply memorizing formulas or procedures
- Breaking challenging problems into simpler steps
- Using examples that apply to their life to introduce new ideas
- Gold-star reward system to recognize progress and encourage students as they advance through challenging levels of problems

My goal is to identify areas where the students may need additional support and help them become more confident and independent problem-solvers.

Typical Lesson Plan

- Quick review of the student's current material and any concepts or problems they are struggling with.
- Introduce new key concepts, guided examples ->problems the student solves more independently
- Each lesson is adapted based on the student's learning style, pace, and upcoming assignments or exams.
