About Lashonda
I am a 200 RYT with Yoga Alliance. I currently offer Vinyasa, Hatha, Trauma-Informed, and Katonah-inspired classes. I am also about to graduate from my 300hr Yoga Teacher Training and will be certified in these additional yoga styles: Yoga Nidra, Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, and Adaptive Yoga.
While I have taught larger yoga classes, my speciality and passion are to work with individuals or small groups, providing personalized body readings and practice designed to fit your needs.
We will chat about your experience level, pain/limitations, goals, and any other pertinent information so I can create sessions that meet you where you are and help you go where you aim to go.
A quick note about Katonah Yoga - I highly encourage you to do a quick google or youtube search for Katonah Yoga and watch a class video or two to understand how Katonah can differ a bit from more traditional yoga classes. While we may work on other forms of yoga based on your needs, my framework relies heavily on Katonah practices, theory, and other insights that I find to be highly valuable when working with the body in any capacity.
Katonah is officially described as:
"Katonah Yoga incorporates classical Hatha yoga with Taoist theory, sacred geometry, magic, mythology, metaphor, and imagination in a practical framework designed to potentiate personal and communal well-being. Framing the practice with maps of time and personal space are defined and refined.
Incorporating themes using asana as origami, manipulating form for function, and developing a sense of personal measure."
I love connecting with new people and helping to guide them through this practice, co-creating a deeply holistic and empowering space. I especially have enjoyed working with groups and individuals who share identities with myself - I have held classes and workshops for BIPOC individuals and targets of police brutality as well as trauma-affected individuals and people who suffer from chronic pain or chronic mental health issues. My classes are open to ANY BODY at any level. If I don't feel I have the particular skill set to give you the guidance you are seeking, I will give you my best referrals!
While I have been practicing and sharing yoga with my loved ones for over a decade, I began my journey to becoming a registered yoga teacher while I was an elementary school teacher with Teach For America in Memphis, TN. I felt that my students had little to no access to mindfulness or spiritual practices to help them learn self-soothing and coping techniques for the oftentimes VERY traumatic experiences in their lives that they brought to school. I have a strong distaste for school punishment systems (and punitive systems in general) as well as the inability of counselors to have the freedom to perform their jobs the way they know how (a lot of red tape from administration and school boards keeps counselors from being able to do the real work). This moved me to receive the "proper" training (200hr certificates) to begin teaching more meaningful practices.

We will have a quick but in-depth chat about your experience level and goals. During our first lesson, I will give you a body reading informed by the information you have disclosed to me - I will also aim to give you a standalone experience with information you can easily reference on your own or with other yoga teachers, should you choose to stop at lesson one. However, this first lesson also easily translates to a long-term teacher-student relationship if you choose to continue. We will do a check-in after each lesson so we can chat about what worked, what didn't, and if we need to tweak any goals or plans for the next lessons.
I have typically taught at the high school and college age range, but am happy to take on older students as well! Part of my process with all students is to include discussions about injuries or modifications we will need to adjust for prior to doing any physical work.
When teachers use the term RYT or E-RYT, it means that they are registered with Yoga Alliance after having received a certification through an accredited yoga school. It is important to note that Yoga Alliance is not the sole regulator of yoga! They are the most widely trusted set of standards for teachings in the yoga community, but they are not always able to enforce perfect quality standards even for their registered teachers - there are just too many students, schools, and alternative pathways.
Teachers are not required by any federal law or medical board to have to be "certified" in yoga (there is no entity that regulates who can and cannot become a teacher) and just because they have a certification or Yoga Alliance registration, that doesn't mean they are well-suited to handle the needs of their students. Certifications can be great tools to deepen a yogis practice and inform their teaching, but beware of the yogi who won't chat with you about your experiences, needs, and goals ahead of time for FREE. That kind of conversation doesn't need to be paid for and you don't need to wait until you are in the session. If it feels off, trust your gut.
I am preparing to offer free yoga classes on youtube and Instagram (concealed information) so I had a dear friend who offered to come learn a bit about my process and model my instructions for students who will be joining remotely (all of the youtube and Instagram-facilitated classes are going to be remote). For context, I very severely broke my ankle in July 2020 and have been in recovery for over a year now - having someone who can consistently model poses and form without having flare-ups is a must! 😄
Since she is my close friend, our yoga practices together have been less formal and very fun up to this point, but I had never done a body reading for her. Doing that reading and teaching her how to "model" for future students was a hilarious experience to say the least, since we uncovered a lot about how spine and hip issues affect her body. It's easy to feel a bit called out when someone says "there you go, leaning into the hip again!", but it was all in good fun!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do you have any injuries we should be aware of? Even small joint issues, things that are uncomfortable like sitting or squatting, asthma, etc. Nothing is too small. Nothing is unimportant or invalid. I don't even care if you have been "diagnosed" - if there is pain, trauma, or discomfort, let me know and we can be sensitive to that as we work.
Do you need a teacher who is aware of techniques for handling trauma or even PTSD in a yoga/mindful environment? These environments can be laden with triggers and you should be able to identify with your teacher whether you might need accommodations (not wanting to be touched, not having the lights turned down, not having essential oils, etc.) Maybe you don't know of/have any triggers. In that case, you should share with your teacher that you have trauma in your experience, but that you are unsure of potential triggers that may arise so you can both create a plan on how to handle those situations should they arise.
Are you looking for something spiritual? Something physical (weightloss, strength, etc)? Both?
Do you have a yoga mat? Yoga blocks? Yoga straps? Yoga blankets? Your teacher should be prepared, just in case you don't, but if you are planning to take lessons long term, you might want to invest in a couple of props here or there. You can ask your teacher the best way to get these items if you're on a budget.

Lashonda's approach to yoga is very alternative and fun! Fast paced at times, she will definitely make ya burn and sweat! Highly recommend! :)
Lashonda is the most excellent yoga teacher, and the only one I will go to. I have tried several other yoga classes, and I always feel like I can’t do some of the positions/ I leave the class in pain. Lashonda’s classes and teaching style are designed for people of all skill levels, and are easy on the muscles. Would recommend for those seeking a truly therapeutic yoga class for both the mind and body.
I was experiencing very bad back pain that led to a horrible tension headaches. I had two sessions with Lashonda and my pain went away not long after.
I was a complete beginner and the instructor really took the time to understand my limits and abilities. We did extremely relaxing proses that stretched out all the right muscles and brought the pain relief I needed!View more recommendations

I typically adhere to a "pay-what-you-can protocol". Making yoga accessible to everyone, especially minority groups, is very important to me. You may see a price here on this website, but I am committed to keeping the amazing teachings of yoga available to everyone regardless of identity, socioeconomic status, etc.
I am not going to promise you enlightenment or perfect physical health and then charge you $150 an hour to make it happen. Improving or maintaining health and wellness should not be exclusive to only the wealthiest among us.
If you can pay more, please consider doing so to help offset the cost of free and low-cost classes I offer for others.
