I provide customised lessons, tailored to each individual student's needs. We will follow the UK national curriculum, whilst also appealing to the students' individual interests, to help them build confidence and enthusiasm in English.

Primary pupils will focus on reading comprehension and writing short stories and poems. Whereas secondary students will explore more mature books; as well as beginning to analyse complex texts - while writing basic essays, speeches and longer prose.

For GCSEs, students will learn how to explain and analyse language techniques and linguistic terminology; and critically evaluate texts using quotes. They'll also be writing essays and speeches accurately, appropriately, and imaginatively. I'll pass on my passion for Shakespeare, and offer valuable insight into the core texts of their course.

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

English has been my passion since I was little. I would read my older brother's books before I even started school. English was always my favourite subject, probably because it was the key to learning everything else. The more words I learnt, the more ideas I could understand and express. After university, I wrote for a few newspapers - and then started teaching when I was 24. I absolutely loved teaching in the classroom for 6 years. However, after the pandemic, I made the shift to online tutoring - as it allowed me to work and travel at the same time, whilst being my own boss.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I mainly teach English and Maths, and find them both enjoyable for different reasons. English language helps students to express themselves, both creatively and analytically. English literature lets them understand the human condition, while engaging with their history and culture. Maths is a series of puzzle-solving exercises, that helps students gain confidence in their ability to find solutions to problems. I honestly enjoy discussing every part of these subjects - but also enjoy integrating knowledge from other subjects that students might be interested in.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was lucky to have really great English and history teachers in year 9, 10 and 11. I learnt a lot from them about how to be a good teacher. They never needed to use disciplinary measures, because they held the attention of the class for the entire lesson. I especially enjoyed the way they would use their extra knowledge and experience to explain new words or scenes in books. Most importantly, they believed in me - and always pushed me to be the best I could be. I'm really grateful they were in my life.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

When teaching 1:1, you have to be able to hold a single young person's attention for a full hour (which is not easy nowadays!) You also have to convince them that time with you is more valuable than looking at their phone or playing video games. You must understand what concepts they're struggling with, and often take the time to explain the same thing a few times. So I would say a tutor needs to be intelligent, engaging, amicable, empathetic and patient.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember my first ever English lesson that I taught when I was volunteering in Vietnam. The topic was "present tense". I confidently strode into a class of non-native English speakers and gave my first example of a present tense English sentence. "She is sat on the chair" I said. A student raised her hand. "Err... teacher, shouldn't it be 'she is sitting on the chair'". I turned pink. I had never thought about how such a common English expression was so grammatically incorrect. Of course, I said I was just testing her! From my first sentence in my first lesson, I learnt to prepare thoroughly, be competent as well as confident, and always be prepared for students to shock you and teach you something you didn't know.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Whilst I was always good at maths when I was at school, I never really enjoyed it. I remember particularly learning about Standard Deviations in statistics. I knew how to work them out, yet I had absolutely no idea what they were - or why we were learning about them. That's why I try to integrate real-life examples into my maths classes, so students can actually see how mathematical concepts are applied in the real world - and particularly in other subjects that they find interesting.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion for travel. I have visited 70 different countries, and online tutoring has really helped me to see more of the world. I love learning about the history, culture and languages of different places. I love movies and theatre, as I am really interested in the art of storytelling, and how language can move people. I also love playing football with my friends; listening to live music; and hiking, swimming, kayaking, and scuba diving.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What a difficult question! I guess what makes me a Superprof is the thousands of students I have taught over the last 9 years, from countries all over the world, who have thanked me for helping them to achieve their goals. The real joy of my job is watching shy kids who mumble a few words transform into vivid storytellers; or students with no confidence in their subject getting an excellent test result. I still remember the teachers who believed in me and shaped my life, and I hope I can be that person for my students!
