About Allison

My love of music started as a small child, and I am passionate about igniting that spark in my students!

I hold bachelor's and master's degrees in Music Performance from Marshall University (flute primary; violin secondary), as well as a post-baccalaureate certificate in Music Education. I am currently in my fifth year as a music educator in Kanawha County Schools, and in my 9th year as a private music instructor. I perform regularly in various ensembles in the Charleston area, and I am also the principal flutist of the West Virginia State Philharmonic Orchestra.

I offer flute lessons for beginning through advanced students, violin lessons for beginning through intermediate students, and voice and piano lessons for beginning students.

I love seeing the moment when a concept clicks for a student, and seeing their understanding of music and their instrument grow.

I have been teaching music in schools for 5 years, and teaching privately for 9 years. I also perform regularly with various ensembles, including the West Virginia State Philharmonic Orchestra.

About the lesson

I focus on two primary objectives when working with a new student. I start the process of building a solid foundation of technique and tone production, and I aim to get the student playing at least part of a song during the first lesson, so that from the very beginning we are building a foundation of expressive musicality. We're not just playing the flute, or playing the violin: we're playing music. If a love of music is cultivated, the rest will follow.

I have worked with students of all ages, from pre-K through adult.

Details

Standard fees are $20 for 30-minute lessons, $30 for 45-minute lessons, and $40 for 60-minute lessons. Prices can possibly be negotiable, depending on circumstances. I also offer virtual lessons via Zoom or FaceTime for the same prices.

I can accept cash, major credit cards, and PayPal. Personal checks will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
