About Charles

I am a graduate from Christopher Newport University and my growth mindset towards music education, and philosophy focused on a lifelong love of music, is what sets me apart from other educators. I have experience playing in many settings and specialize on audition anxiety control and ensemble preparation.

I enjoy the progress that students make while taking private lessons. I wish that I would have taken advantage of my community for lessons while I was in high school, because it puts you in such a great spot for future playing and present playing.

I have my bachelors in music and will graduate in 2020 with my masters in instrumental education. I have plenty of experience in ensemble performance and solo rep. While in college I played first trumpet for the wind ensemble, the marching band, the jazz band, the orchestra, the university band, the choir (special occasions) and many other small esnsembles.

I for about 2 years in college, I was a double major in music education and music composition, but it became too expensive so I decided to drop compositions. While a composition major, I composed more than 5 pieces and create a foundational composition methed that allows me to create chordal structures based of off names.

About the lesson

My process aligns closely with my ideals as a future band director. I focus on tone quality first, then rhythm, pitch, articulation, and musicality. I start out with getting a feel for the students intention for trumpet lessons, then I get a feel for who they want to sound like. I then talk a lot about posture and air control, because that is very important. Once I feel the student can play enough notes to play music, I will introduce a solo piece to them so that they can experience that field.

I have worked with a range of students, from beginner to high school level players.

I charge $20 for a half hour Trumpet lesson, And $15 for half our composition lessons.
