About James

My teaching experience extends over three decades, all learning levels and several countries. Most recently, I was employed as Head of the Classics Department over a 10 year period at a large and prestigious independent boys' school in north-west London, expanding the teaching remit to include Ancient Greek and Classical Civilisation, while helping dozens of students in their successful application to Oxbridge and Russell Group universities. In addition to teaching, I have acted as a private tutor to a large number of students for over 15 years, introduced either by reputable tutor agencies or by personal recommendation (word of mouth). I have found both roles equally rewarding and satisfying in their different ways and am eager to continue helping students achieve their best. Although now semi-retired, I retain my passion for teaching and have extended my forays into private tuition to embrace a diverse and numerous group of tutees. My goal: to aid each student in attaining their highest potential and exploring ideas of further study. My tutees' success in learning and examination forms one of my greatest sources of satisfaction!

About the lesson

My lessons are always bespoke to the needs of the individual student, targeting weaknesses in skills and knowledge, encouraging genuine interest and a passion in language and culture that makes learning a joy! I am able to draw upon my extensive and lengthy teaching experience, employing a wide variety of texts and resources, in order to facilitate speedy remediation and effective revision. The effective teaching of vocabulary - beyond the mere needs of the syllabus to reveal Classical roots in English - represents a key strategy, often overlooked by other practitioners: etymology / word origins are a built-in source of knowledge and insight that stimulate understanding and delight! Tutees will take away periodic learning targets and a small amount of optional 'homework' or 'prep' is regularly set ahead of future sessions. The ancients still speak to us - Latin and Greek are far from being so-called 'dead languages'! Mastery of the Classics opens doors to many fields...

Details

Following initial introductions and discussion, our first (free!) session will focus on exploring areas of desired improvement, analysis of past efforts and devising smart targets for learning and revision. Students will be asked to complete a short questionnaire, summarising past and current instruction, textbooks, set texts (if relevant) and attainment.
