About Lindsey
My passion for teaching intially began when I started working as a tutor at Appalachian State. I tutored there for two years in various subjects, from introductory Spanish to advanced courses such as phonetics & diction and advanced grammar & composition. I also tutored students in various subjects in Psychology, as well as interdisciplinary studies. Because my teaching experience is informed by tutoring, I like to take an individualized approach, learning what a student likes best, and how they like to receive feedback and what their expectations are for each session.
While I don't have any reviews on this website yet, please check out my website for statistics on my teaching evaluations since 2016!
I love working one-on-one and with groups to help students discover patterns and their own interests and passions while learning. Learning a language is distinct from learning any other subject, and has applications for whatever career path or interest a student wants to follow. I love seeing students feel empowered and confident when they tackle challenging material.
I realized that I had an interest in teaching as an undergraduate, when I saw the ideal career path for me reflected in my professors' work. I began tutoring in truth for extra income, but quickly came to realize that I enjoyed tutoring and the connections that I was making with the students over the material we reviewed. I was soon spending as much time in class as I was tutoring throughout the week.
I have two years of experience in tutoring undergraduate students, including non-traditional, student athletes, and studens with diverse abilities. I tutored subjects such as Elementary and Intermediate Spanish, Accelerated Spanish, Grammar in Context, Phonetics & Diction, Advanced Writing & Composition, Introductory Psychology and Behavior Change.
As an MA student, I taught Spanish 1, 2, and spent one year as a virtual grader for Spanish 3.
As a PhD student, I have taught Spanish 2, 3, and most recently, Introduction to Spanish Linguistics and Intensive Spanish Grammar and Composition.

When I'm working with a new student, I like to take the time to establish a personal connection with the student, including discussing their interests and hobbies. I also like to set expectations for communications and feedback, as well as the major topics that a student wants to cover and which take biggest priority. I integrate reflective listening and use this information to personalize each following session. Establishing a trusting and respectful connection is integral when working with a new student to ensure that they know they can come to me with any and all issues with the course, as I am there to help!
I have extensive experience with college-age young adults, including student athletes and students with diverse abilities. I have also gained some experience working with high school students and non-traditional students, mostly older populations.
I think the most important aspects for a language instructor include teaching with enthusiasm and a variety of tools or modes of instruction and assistance that can suit a variety of learning styles and preferences. For long-term benefits, you want a tutor or teacher that will help you arrive at an answer and understand concepts through your own thinking, which leads to long-term information retention and confidence boosting.
There is so much that brings me joy, but the one memory that I keep coming back to is the summer of 2019, when I spent 8 weeks leading a group of college students to manage 19 emergency home repairs in Central Appalachia, as well as over 1,000 volunteers who helped complete these repairs. This experience taught me the value of motivation and team-building, while serving the community.
