About Ryan

It first started with me helping out friends at my university with their intermediate spanish courses. Then my services got the attention of the Spanish department professors (mostly because they saw improvements in their student's work!) and they reached out to me for more meetings. Eventually the university began paying me to tutor students in a few different subjects and classes.

For me, tutoring has always been fun and a hobby/passion of mine.

I have 10 years of formal education as a student of the Spanish language. To reinforce those 10 years, I have also travelled abroad to learn dialects and coloqial terminology. Further, I am also a student of international affairs where I have done research on Latin American politics - most of which requires translation from Spanish to English sourcing.

Being a student of the language, and being a young adult, I feel like I have the ability to connect with younger students and teach them the skills and approaches - because I was in their shoes not too long ago!

About the lesson

My approach with a new student depends on my student's circumstance. I have worked with many individuals with many different reasons for learning a langauge.

For my typical appointment with someone struggling in a class, or more recently have lost their in-person teaching due to COVID-19, I like to get a baseline of where they are at before we jump in just with a basic interview and review of the class. This gives me an idea of what to reinforce, their attitude going into the course, and how I will need to present material for them to learn the best - we all learn in different ways!

As previously mentioned, I have worked with students from all sorts of backgrounds. The students who just want to pass the class, the students who are passionate and just need some concept instruction, and the students who just cant seem to get it.

I also think my background is unique because I have worked with vulnerable populations too. I have paired my spanish ability with trauma-informed care in order to make sure that students, and those who need interpreting services, feel welcome and included.

Details

Most of my work has been in the 'volunteer' realm of spanish teaching and interpretation. Spanish is fun for me and it is second-nature. I pride myself on being fair, so I will not waste your student's time, or their money.

Pricing is flexible depending on the needs of your student AND your family. The "going-rate" for Spanish tutors is about $30/hour. Being that spanish tutors are high demand right now and everything must be online, I will be offering $20/hour sessions. Sessions are typically about an hour or so and we can be flexible
