About Alex

I am a native Spanish speaker who has taught Spanish in both academic and business settings. Each curriculum is specifically designed and tailored for each one of my students - whether you want to learn the basics, have conversations with friends and families, or could benefit from “business” Spanish for work. I have been teaching for about 12 years to adult learners all around the globe.

Not only having the opportunity to teach a beautiful language, but introduce my culture through Spanish. I try to sprinkle some cultural nuances to my classes - holidays and celebrations, (Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day), non-verbal communication (yeah, we use our hands and gestures A LOT), foods & cooking (I love to cook and have some awesome recipes), travel tips (Puebla is an awesome city), music genres (be able to identify the difference between rancheras, cumbias, salsa, merengue, corridos, etc)

Spanish is my first language. I moved the US in 4th grade, which is when I technically stopped learning Spanish in an academic setting. Early on in my professional career, I realized that even though I spoke "fluent" Spanish, my language skills were not enough to use Spanish in a professional seeting. I focused on effectively learning and language and eventually began teaching Spanish to other business professionals as part of formal professional development programs. I have been teaching Spanish on-and-off since 2001.

I am fluent in Spanish ... Spanish is my native/1st language. I have been certified to conduct instructor led courses in a professional setting. Have taught in classroom settings with multiple students, have taught 1-on-1, and have done lots of e-learning.

About the lesson

Understand each student's goals. Based on what they want to achieve, I use one of three different textbooks to help guide class content. I tailor my curriculum for each student. I believe in deep immersion - not full immersion - where I speak to students in Spanish as much as possible. Additionally, I try to provide students with experiences that will force them and allow them to use Spanish ... for example, going to a Mexican restaurant and only use Spanish, or watch a Spanish-language movie (without subtitles) and discuss the movie ... you will be surprised how much you actually understood :)

Have a conversation first to ensure your goals are clearly understood and determine if instructor can really help you achieve those goals.

I completed a year-long course with a company that had 15 students go through the course. I absolutely enjoyed this class! I had the flexibility to incorporate many different tools into the class ... movies, music, celebrations, outings. Lots of fun!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- Why do I want to learn Spanish? If your goal is to learn for career advancement, I will approach classes differently if your goal is to learn because you have a trip to Mexico City next year.
