About Valerie

I love working with students and helping them expand their knowledge! I know how difficult it can be to ask for help, so I want to form strong relationships with each of my students to make them feel comfortable with asking for help. I give every student my full attention and am dedicated to help them thrive. I ultimately want to give students the confidence, knowledge, and necessary skills to succeed in the classroom.

I love being able to see students grow throughout their journey, not just academically but also personally. While I love teaching students concepts, I also love to hear about their interests and hobbies. Forming these relationships with students makes tutoring fun for both the student and the tutor!

Because I love helping others, I started tutoring other students during high school. I mostly helped them with Spanish and math homework. During my sophomore year of high school, I began tutoring students from across the country through the online nonprofit, Learn to Be.

From 2017-2020, I tutored at Learn to Be, a nonprofit organization meant to help underpriviledged students. I tutored mostly third-sixth graders in reading, writing, and math. By meeting with them every week, I helped increase their test scores by a letter grade. This is the same commitment that I will bring to the students here.

More recently, I've tutored students from underfunded public schools in New Haven as part of Yale University's Homework Hotline. I meet with them weekly to go over homework and review any concepts that they may be struggling with.

About the lesson

First, I hold a preliminary meeting where we discuss the goals for our sessions (reviewing homework, learning new concepts, etc.), when we want to meet, and get to know each other. Once we figure out a schedule, we meet at least weekly. I keep parents updated on the students' progress either at the end of the tutoring session or via email/phone (whichever they prefer).

I have worked with students from 1st-10th grade. My recent work has been with elementary and middle school students. My main focus areas are math, writing, reading, and Spanish.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your goals for this academic school year, personal and academic? What areas are you hoping to improve? What learning style works best for you?

Because most of my tutoring experience has been volunteer work, I don't have a standard pricing system. $20-$25/hr seems fair to me, but this is subject to change depending on the grade-level I'm tutoring.
