About Izolda

I love teaching people to discover their voices. Whether it's through voice or violin, we all have a birthright to make music. I began teaching violin in 1997 and my customized Learn to Sing classes in 2001. I have worked as an adjunct professor and guested lecturer at colleges and universities along the Eastern Seaboard. I've been teaching privately for many years. I specialize in teaching people who are afraid to sing or who have significant pitch issues.

Born in Moldova in the former Soviet Union, I have been singing since before I can remember. I sang folk music with my professional vocalist mother and began the study of classical violin at age five. I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BA in English Drama.

Today, I perform as a soloist on voice, guitar, fiddle, flute, recorder. Additionally, I sing soprano and manage the a cappella holiday caroling group, The Philosopher’s Tones.

I began teaching voice in 1992 and began my group Learn to Sing class in 2001.

I also conduct Work In Harmony corporate team-building workshops to help people build confidence and become a cohesive team through singing.

About the lesson

We talk about what the student wants to achieve (become a professional singer? Sing holiday carols at church? Be able to sing along to the radio in the car? etc). Then, I lead them through a warm-up that will help them get ready to sing their best. And I ask them to sing a couple of lines of their favorite song so I can evaluate where they are. Once I know that and also know what their singing goals are, I develop a customized lesson plan. I also have an extensive set of practice files online that all my students have access to. That way, they can keep practicing and improving between our lessons.
