About Claire

I find the most exciting part of tutoring to be connecting with my students! I am a firm believer that each individual possesses a slightly different learning style. The number one lesson I have learned in medical school is that there is not every study strategy or resource works for everyone. With that understanding, I seek to work closely with students to develop a sustainable study strategy that works for them.

Ever since I started teaching in high school, I have never stopped. Sharing my experiences and knowledge with other students is one of my favorite activities, as I would not be where I currently am without my own mentors. I enjoy exploring the many different ways in which different subject matters can be approached with my students.

I got started teaching through tutoring my younger brother and his friends (elementary school students at the time) in standard school subjects, such as history and literature. Throughout college, I volunteered my time to tutor underprivileged elementary school students in West Harlem in school subjects. Furthermore, I worked as a teaching assistant for my professors at Columbia University for several years in several psychology and neuroscience courses.

I primarily developed my study skills during high school, and I believe they were essential to preparing me for standardized exams like the SAT, which I was able to complete with a perfect (2400) score. I also graduated from Columbia University in 2021 with honors and a major in neuroscience. In college, I took extensive courses in the classics, philosophy, mathematics, and the sciences, and therefore I feel prepared to share my knowledge with my students. I am currently continuing my education in medical school. Furthermore, I have tutored different levels of students since I was in high school in several different topics - traditional school subjects (history, science, etc.) and standardized exams - and therefore feel comfortable working with different students according to their learning styles.

About the lesson

I like to begin a first session or introduction with a diagnostic discussion; as a tutor, I find it important to be in agreement with my student regarding what he or she struggles with or seeks to improve on. Once such an understanding is established, I like to work with the student to create a study or learning schedule that works to achieve his or her goals.

I have worked with elementary, middle, and high school students on various subject matters, including standardized test preparation.

Details

Based on experience, I typically charge $110 an hour for standardized test preparation. For specialized subject tutoring, I typically charge $125, but I am willing to work with students regarding this front based on their needs.
