About Tatiaira

One of my fondest childhood memories is sitting in a corner writing essays to my grandfather about why I chose to misbehave and how I would go about fixing my behavior in the future. Back then, there was no one on this planet that could have convinced me that years later I’d be graduating college with a BA in creative writing, but here I am. Looking back, I realize writing has taken up a substantial part of my life and was always a way for me to express myself when I was unable to articulate my thoughts clearly (the struggles of being an introvert).

In my art, I like to capture the rawness of a given moment or experience, which has taken me many years to perfect. I’ve found that I am able to express this rawness best through poetry. I write to spark emotion; to stir and arouse feelings that have been suppressed, overlooked, and neglected. In a world where we are all taught to be numb, I welcome sensitivity. I thrive to pour my passion, myself into everything I write and only hope to help each of my students flourish in writing the same.

As the oldest of three, teaching the youth was a given and something I have been blessed to do for the majority of my life.

I obtained my BA in creative writing from Eastern Michigan University where I also minored in communications. During my time there, I wrote and self-published two chapbooks and further developed my skills in childcare. I have quite a bit of experience working with children from ages 1-12 and aspire to encourage and guide the youth through writing.

I always like to start off with a warm introduction. I believe it's important to develop a relationship with each student in order to understand their individual learning styles and personalities. I then like to proceed with an assessment so that I may identify where the student is thriving and where they need work. Finally, once I have a better understanding of where a student is struggling, I like to break down that area of struggle into sections and take it step by step, checking in with the student often to ensure they are comfortable and understand each section before moving forward. Patience is key.

In the past, I've worked with younger students between the ages of 1-5, but I have also tutored children as old as 12.

My best advice would be to look for someone whose passion oozes from within them. As a teacher, you should not only have skills but heart as well.

I recently had the opportunity to virtually work with some wonderful women for the 2021 Women's Symposium at Eastern Michigan University. I was able to share a few personal pieces that were selected to be a part of the event which was simply an honor and such a wonderful experience.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students may ask themselves questions as simple as "what do I know and what am I confused about?" Once focusing in on what is confusing, students, with the help of their teachers, can go forth to understand why a subject or topic is confusing to get to the root of the problem.
