About Karen

Hello,

Are you wondering if remote tutoring will work for your child? I can tell you, having spent my entire adult working life as an elementary teacher, yes, yes it can! My name is Karen Sebastian and I am recently retired from full time teaching and now tutor exclusively online. I LOVE IT! I love the ease it provides both my students and myself, we just log on at a set time! Nobody is spending time driving or getting ready to leave the house or have someone come into yours. You will not need to leave the comfort of your own home to get a high quality tutoring experience!

Best of all, however, is the undivided attention I can give your child. I have worked in person with children as an elementary teacher for nearly 30 years and I am amazed at how much more focused and observant both teacher and student can be in online tutoring sessions. I can have everything I need for my lesson designed specifically for your student loaded and ready to go, watch your child solving and working through problems with undivided focus, and spontaneously adjust to the learning needs your child is showing me in real time. Your child and I can collaborate together through online whiteboards, websites, and of course through the camera with complete focus on the work at hand. Parents can observe lessons whenever they choose and stay informed on what their child is working on and the progress he or she is making.

Ok, by why should you choose me at $50 an hour? The simple answer is you get what you pay for. I am an experienced, proven professional. I can assess your child's needs and how to meet them. I know why and how kids struggle with grade level expectations and what to do about it. I have 30 years of experience and extensive training that I can put to use to help your child.

For example, my latest student is a 5th grade student who came to me struggling with learning her math facts and keeping up in her math class, despite having many years of specialized help both inside and outside of her private school that has small class sizes. Within 4 months she had mastered her multiplication facts and was achieving at rate comparable to her classmates in math class. As a tutor, I was able to give this student individualized attention, targeted strategies, and guided practice that enabled her to master her timetables and tricky math concepts. I also taught this same child a systematic approach to reading, designed especially for students who struggle with typical reading instruction. She is now, for the first time, independently using decoding skills in her reading, reading challenging and interesting books independently, and reading with much more ease within the school setting.
