About Jonathan

My passion for teaching reading began while helping my own children overcome challenges including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and autism. That experience inspired me to become a certified South Carolina Literacy Teacher and complete advanced training through Reading Recovery and Read to Succeed graduate coursework.

I now provide one-on-one online tutoring designed to help children grow in phonics, fluency, comprehension, and confidence. I enjoy partnering with families to create personalized plans that meet each child’s unique needs.

Reading should not be a mystery or a struggle. I love helping students unlock the skills and confidence they need to succeed.

Getting to know them is very important.

I like to also assess what the child knows in the following areas:

- concepts in print

- hearing sounds

- letter recognition

- writing

- sight words

All of this, as well as their interest, will help in the text selection.

About the lesson

The first step in the process is to explore.

First, explore who they are and what they like. Also, at the same time, discover where they are at with language. This includes letter and word recognition, seeing and hearing sounds, writing words and letters, and understanding of concepts in print.

With this foundation of knowledge and relationship, targeted lessons and book selection can be used to both encourage their present reading level as well as help progress into higher levels of reading mastery.

From this point, each lesson will include reading familiar texts, letter recognition, Word work, sentence construction, as well as introducing a new text.

Being a 20-year public school educator, I have, of course, worked with a very diverse range of students.

Reading is about engaging a symphony of your brain. In other words, reading instruction should incorporate attention to many different approaches. Approaches such as reading, writing, letter recognition, phonics, word parts, sight words, and comprehension just to name a few.
