My students struggle with reading and spelling, and are typically falling behind their peers. Because each student brings his/her own literacy issues to therapy, I craft a plan CUSTOMIZED to meet the INDIVIDUAL needs of each student. Aside from phonics, I often integrate sight words, comprehension, vocabulary, cursive, composition, fluency, and morphology into sessions. My specialty is helping children read and spell long words.

Therefore, as you can imagine, sessions are robust, yet I aim to make them engaging and FUN as well. I end each session with a concept-specific game.

What makes me unique is my background. I grew up under a roof where illiteracy bore its well of shame. I entered the helping professions and became a nurse's aide, substitute teacher, youth mentorship coordinator, and a licensed mental health counselor. I know that some of the potential CONSEQUENCES of illiteracy and dyslexia may be low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, addiction, and incarceration.

I also know that with the RIGHT INTERVENTION, most people are capable of learning to read proficiently and lead productive lives. Reading is the foundation of all other subjects; the core of all knowledge. When your child learns to read and spell, his/her time in high school will pave the way to a fulfilling career and life. LEARNING TO READ IS THAT IMPORTANT!

In my literacy therapy sessions, I can address both the literacy and mental health aspects. If your child chooses to discuss a recent low point, we will brainstorm healthy COPING SKILLS.

Although dyslexia certainly comes with its fair amount of struggles, it can also behold some advantages. I approach dyslexia from a STRENGTH-BASED perspective and discuss with my students the many ways neurodivergent brains process sounds and information. Dyslexia is a LEARNING DIFFERENCE to acknowledge and work with, not to turn from and deny. I want my students to EMBRACE WHO THEY ARE!

I am compassionate, patient, funny, respectful, and organized. I pride myself on my excellent communication skills, not only with parents, but with my students' teachers. I am a COLLABORATOR. Because so many of my students also profit from extra advocacy, I offer IEP ADVOCACY free of charge.

I utilize materials primarily from LiteraSee and The Literacy Nest, which are OG-based intervention programs. I also have access to materials from REWARDS and Reading Simplified, which are evidence-based programs. Prior to opening my private practice, I worked for a prominent dyslexia therapy company.

Additionally, I also conduct comprehensive online dyslexia evaluations, which measures reading, spelling, and other language based skills. The evaluation report provides documentation which can be used to support the necessity of school accommodations and intervention services. It is also paints a clear picture of the specific deficits and recommendations parents appreciate.

What I enjoy most about my work is the ability to work one-on-one with my students. Each session is completely customized to that particular student at that particular time. Knowing that my students are getting the help they so desperately need and deserve is so heartwarming to me. They no longer have to slip through the cracks! Watching my students learn how to approach long words is as thrilling for me as it is for them. This skill alone opens up a whole new world to them! My work is very fulfilling.

I have known since I was a young girl what illiteracy can do to a person. I was determined to set a different course for my life and then help others along the way. Although I always loved the idea of teaching, I initially pursued a career the mental health field. After my daughter started struggling in school, I began to study dyslexia in my attempt to help her. I worked for a large tutoring company for a while until I decided to carve out my own path. My passion is literacy!

I have a Master of Arts degree in Counseling & Human Services. I worked with troubled youth in a psychiatric faciility. I have also worked as a coodinator for a youth mentorship organization.

I completed my literacy training with Lexercise and am certified as a structured literacy dyslexia specialist by the International Dyslexia Association's certification body, the Center for Effective Reading Instruction (C-SLDS). Structured literacy therapy goes beyond typical OG tutoring as it is explicit, sequential, cumulative, and multisensory while focusing on phonics, comprehension, phonemic awareness, fluency, and vocabulary. It is very customizable and comprehensive.

I have also completed the training from Reading Simplified, a speech-to-print, approach.

Before working as a dyslexia specialist, I worked as a substitute teacher, youth mentorship coordinator, mental health therapist, and homeschool teacher.

About the lesson

The parent contacts me for an free consultation. We discuss the difficulties their child is experiencing and what the parent is looking for. I direct them to my website for further information. If they choose to begin therapy, they complete the enrollment form on my website. From there, the initial meeting is scheduled. Here, I conduct a few assessments and get to meet their child. I draw up a therapy plan and we usually begin therapy the following week!

Typically, my students are in grades 4-8 and are either homeschooled, in private schools, live in a variety of time zones, or are international students. I tutor from 8am to 4pm MT. All of them struggle with phonics. Some of my students also need help with comprehension strategies, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and composition skills. Many of my students struggle with self-esteem and anxiety issues. Because of my background in mental health counseling, I offer a listening ear to discuss my students develop some basic coping skills.

I would advise a parent/student to ask about a tutor's background and training, and ensure they are certified. I would ask if they are willing to include other elements of literacy besides phonics in the sessions. It would be important for me that the sessions would include games to make it as fun as possible. I would want to know if any practice is going to be assigned and how often they will assess my child.

I had a young girl who came to me really disliking reading and the fact that her friends were beginning to discuss books. She felt left out. I worked with her for several months and by the end of our therapy, she was beaming with pride in her ability to read long words and contribute to conversations about books with her friends! This made my heart happy!!!

My practice uses a tuition model. Parents pay automatically at the beginning of the month via Stripe. Tuition is $75/session, which involves preparation, instructional delivery, and after care. Typically, with biweekly sessions, there are at least 8 sessions/month which translates to $650/month. With triweekly sessions, there are at least 12 sessions/month. Tuition is $975/month. The first invoice is usually prorated and due before the first session. Comparatively speaking, my rates are very reasonable.
