About Joseph

In my 20 years of playing music, my emphasis has always been on unlocking the creativity within, and pursuing music in search of a universal connection that can bring us all together. I have been playing drums for 20 years, composing for 12 years, and playing piano for 5 years.

In high school at Churchville-Chili, I won the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award and was invited to perform in the Eastman Youth Jazz Orchestra, with whom I was blessed with the opportunity to play at Xerox-Rochester International Jazz Festival. I did NYSSMA my final two years in a row and earned excellent marks both times, being invited to drum for the all-county jazz choir. I went on to get my Bachelor's from University of New Orleans where I studied Jazz and received the Ernest Svenson Award in composition, George Brumat Jazz Award, Nate and Priscilla Gordon Jazz Scholarship, and Gregory Federico Jazz Scholarship. I went on to get my Master's in Music at New England Conservatory where I graduated with a GPA of 3.9.

While the bulk of my early education was in jazz, I also have studied classical composition in-depth for over a decade now. I also have studied many different strains of "world" music especially Indian classical percussion, Brazilian styles of various flavors, and traditional drumming from Ghana.

As a teacher, I create personalized lesson plans based around the needs, ability, and interest of my students. I've taught Drums, Piano and Music Theory privately for the last six years to dozens of students, and the majority of my students have stayed long-term (more than one year). I am very familiar with the college board AP music theory exam and can help you prepare for it.

I started teaching in New Orleans when fans at my concerts had reached out about learning drums from me. Over time, my teaching repertoire expanded to include piano and I took a job as a private teacher teaching both piano and drums in Boston, where I still maintain connections with some online students.

I studied with some of the best musicians and teachers in the world: Jason Marsalis, Ricky Sebastian, Yotam Haber, Rajna Swaminathan, Billy Hart, Hankus Netsky, Joe Morris, Sri Suresh Vaidyanathan, Vidwan Umayalpuram Mali, Damas "Fan Fan" Louis, and many others.

In New Orleans I not only studied music in the university, but also worked as a professional performer for five years and saw what kind of skills are truly needed to make a career in the industry.

In Boston, I studied in the very exclusive Contemporary Improvisation department, one of the only such programs in the world which is designed to create independent creative musicians. There we learned multidisciplinary approaches with an emphasis on aural learning and the music of non-white artists and cultures.

About the lesson

Before the teaching starts, I like to communicate with the student and/or parent(s) to find out what they are looking for. Some students just want to learn music for fun, some are aspiring professionals, some need help studying for exams or applying to music colleges, etc. Once we have this established, we will start with a combination of creative and technical work to help the student build up both right and left brain capabilities.

With piano, if the student is new and does not have a preference for what they want to learn, I usually start with either Alfred Piano Method, Mikrokosmos, or if they already have some experience, some simple classical or jazz pieces such as the Bach Minuet or Prelude in C major, Mood Indigo or Gymnopedies. We will work on staff reading, fingering, basic technical exercises and sometimes creative work such as composition assignments or improvisation depending on the student's interest.

For drums, I almost always use the books Syncopation, and Stick Control for beginners as they are the standard repertoire for new drummers. These two books have a lot of variations that are not necessarily indicated in the text but have been taught to me by my teachers and can be used as a primary source for drummers of every level. For beginners, we will work on things like grip, basic independence between the hands and feet, timekeeping, counting, and styles/grooves. For more advanced students, we can work on transcriptions, analysis and comparative studies, and more advanced techniques and independence exercises.

I've worked with students who range from five years old to over 50. I've worked with neurotypical students as well as students with ADHD. My clients have told me that I am an exceptionally patient and compassionate teacher even with younger students who are struggling with focus or emotional issues.

It's important to approach music with an open mind and be ready to move in unexpected directions to find a way to your goal that you might not have predicted. I try to teach students rather than how to reproduce standard answers, to ask new questions and look for the familiar aspects of something unfamiliar. Music is not a sport, there is no winning or losing. I can and do help my students achieve standards of performance, but the most important thing about music is learning how to express the things that you feel and becoming more human through this. This may sound confusing, but if you think of music as a language, we want to be writing poetry rather than reading the dictionary.

Recently, a young student sent me a postcard he drew himself, showing Sam I Am from Green Eggs and Ham playing piano with me on the laptop screen teaching. I thought that was really sweet because this student had to overcome struggles with motivation on the piano and has grown to love it, just like the character from the book.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Almost all students struggle with one of these two things: not feeling confident in telling a teacher what their needs or wants are, expecting lessons to lead to guaranteed results without investment on the part of the students. You should never feel embarrassed if you need me to clarify or repeat something, no matter how many times, to take a step back, or if you need a break during the lesson for physical or emotional reasons. At the same time, you will not get better unless you practice or study. This isn't the matrix :P
