About Shala

I really take the time to get to know my students so that I am able to teach to each student as an individual. While I provide many performance and competition opportunities, I never pressure any student to participate because I know that's not what is always in that person's best interest.

I also provide a complete musical education experience - ear training, rhythm, theory, applied theory, sight-reading, etc. - because I want to make sure you not only know how to play the piano well, but that you understand every part of the process so that you can, eventually, easily advance to each new level.

I love seeing the moment it "clicks." I also enjoy tailoring my lessons to the individual. I've been blessed by having a diverse student population. I really enjoy learning about other's traditions and finding a way to incorporate them into our music lessons.

A neighbor asked me to teach her kids. I had taught some before this but I never thought about it as a career. Turned out, I had a talent for it and I've worked very hard to continue to educate myself so I can constantly become a better teacher.

I took private lessons for 13 years. I have been playing and performing for a total of 35 years. I belong to MTNA, WSMTA, PVMTA, National Federation of Musicians and The Piano Guild (a division of the American College of Musicians).

About the lesson

I like to do an interview first. This gives me a chance to get to know my prospective student and this give the prospective student a chance to get to know me and my process to see if it is something that will work for them.

I have worked with students with autism, Down syndrome, PTSD and RAD.

I have worked with students from beginner to advanced music.

One of the most important things is looking for a teacher that you or your child clicks with. Especially with children, if the relationship isn't a comfortable one then learning tends to be an issue. If you or your child feels intimidated or not valued, it can make learning extremely difficult.

We recently did our annual holiday recital at a local assisted living facility. I think this is my favorite recital of the year.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How much time do you have in your life for practicing?

Are you interested in performing and/or competing or is this just for personal enjoyment?

If this is for your child, think about what your involvement will be in your child's learning.
