About Austin

Classically trained in Double Bass performance, Austin has a passion for helping students use their skills more efficiently and perform to the best of their ability. Austin has been playing for 14 years, performing at Carnegie Hall and the former Avery Fisher Hall (now David Geffen Hall) in NYC, Basillica Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré in Quebec, and Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. As a high school student, he studied under Susan Powell of the Hartt School and the Juilliard School. He was the principal bassist for the Opus 89 youth orchestra and co-principal for the Connecticut Youth Symphony at the Hartt School of Music, performing with the Hartford Symphony. From 2011-2014 he participated in the New England Music Festival where he served as the principal bassist in 2014. Austin welcomes students of all ages but has the most experience with students of middle and high school age.

Austin's performance coaching welcomes students of all stringed instruments and skill levels looking to perform music authentically to the period it was written. Coaching includes period specific hand techniques, period/composer specific phrasing, choosing the right strings, performance posture for solo or concerto work, and consultations for audition pieces. He specializes in music of the baroque and romantic periods.

I enjoy helping young musicians become the players they envision themselves to be. There is nothing more rewarding than the moment I make a change to how a student is playing and watching them surprise themselves by how well they can sound.

About the lesson

For musical students, an initial consultation to evaluate their goals, strong and weak points, learning style, type of music they wish to perform, and create a practice plan to achieve their goals. For subsequent lessons evaluate progress and make any adjustments to the plan and work with the student to find supplementary pieces that will help them achieve their goals.

For performance coaching students (including those with stage fright), the initial consultation will include the piece or style they want to improve their performance of, jointly creating a list of goals, a full annotation of a recorded performance (as applicable), historical evaluation of the piece and composer, including contemporary performance videos for reference and guidance. Students may choose to send a video of a performance at least 7 days prior to their initial lesson, billing for this option will be discussed on an individual basis and replaces the initial consultation. Any subsequent lessons will include evaluating the recording together, making changes or improvements to phrasing and style, and tips 'n tricks to performing with a professional stage presence.

Mostly middle and high school students looking to audition for regionals, all state, New England music festival, or honors level school orchestras. Some college students, primarily for performance consultations.

Hiring a private teacher is very individual, and can only teach you so much. For these reasons, I suggest trying several teachers to find your best fit, and to change teachers when you feel your playing has stagnated or you want to start playing in a style they do not have much experience in. If you don't prepare for your lessons, you won't get better because the lesson will focus more on the work that could have been done individually and less on the music.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What you want and your realistic expectations for lessons. What problems or issues are you having that could improve your playing if you knew how to fix them. How much time you are willing to put into preparing for lessons (practice is for learning your part, rehearsal is for learning everyone else's part, and lessons are for learning how to play your part to the best of your ability). What type of music do you want to play. What level of playing do you intend to reach (high school, music education, professional music degree, conservatory training, etc.).

Musical Students:

$45 for initial 1hr consultation and practice plan. $30/hr subsequent lessons (minimum 30mins)

Coaching Students:

$50/hr for initial consultation, performance evaluation, and practice plan. Time depends on length of the piece. $30/hr subsequent lessons (minimum 30mins).

Online Lessons or Consultations: $30/hr
