About Griffin

I have earned a Master's degree in Mathematics from The Ohio State University, and I hold a Bachelor's degree from Vassar College. During my studies, I was also a Graduate Teaching Associate for two years. I taught Calculus at various levels and provided weekly tutoring services.

I know math is not natural for most students. So what makes me a great teacher is that my teaching approach matches that of my best professors in college. In particular, for each problem I encounter with a student, I not only explain why a solution is correct, but I articulate how I would attack the problem. This articulation is crucial because I know the frustration of understanding a solution, yet not knowing how to arrive at this solution by myself. So my teaching method focuses on teaching the student how to solve problems without assistance, not just having them learn the material.

I taught Calculus for two years as a graduate student, which consisted of giving recitations and holding office hours.

About the lesson

First, I identify their needs (e.g., some students have a good grasp on material and just want the confidence to handle an exam well, others feel like they're drowning and need a life raft before proceeding). Then I challenge the student to share what they can do on their own, and when they get stuck, they talk me through what they find challenging. I have noticed a lot of patterns when students get stuck, and can offer shortcuts so that they can solve difficult problems on their own - providing a personalized blueprint is much better than me simply telling them the answer, so that they can have the confidence to take an exam on their own.
