About Barbara
I believe that Mathematics is the most essential academic subject we teach. Beyond counting and making change, you can't cross a street without Geometry, you can't shop for groceries without Algebra.
It is a shame that many intelligent people will say, "I just can't handle math". Almost everyone can master basics, like determining the diameter of a circle if they are taught right.
I am not a school teacher and many believe that tutors should be. To this I respond, the teacher your child has must not be doing the job. I have been a math scholar all my life and an engineer and attorney, I have taught many things to many people. I believe that your child will not only pass but, more importantly, understand how it works in our everyday environment.
There is nothing more gratifying than to help a person solve his own problem.
As I said, I am not a schoolteacher. My work in construction as an engineer was interesting, sometimes fun and rewarding. How many people can point to an object and say I helped make that. Most of my legal work is helping parties resolve their disputes. I am happy when a matter is settled but even if it is not right now, my mediating helps the parties evaluate their cases.

First I want to know how they're doing in school and what their attitude about learning. The first thing I need to do is get them excited about the prospect of success. This will not happen the first day, but I will get them to admit what they think is missing and tell them sincerely that help is on the way.
I work with their textbooks and tests.
I want to hear of any particular nuances or problems from the parents so I can addresss them.
I want early success so I will teach and then evaluate and the child will see his or her own improvement.
