About Ian
I am entering my 15th year as a high school math teacher. I have taught every subject multiple times offered at a high school level. I currently teach Pre-Calculus and AP Calculus. I also teach at two community colleges. I have been teaching math at the colleges for 6 years including summers. I spend my summers tutoring high school students in every math subject for summer school. I am Highly Certified in Math for the state of Arizona. I also currently teach dual enrollment for Rio Salado Community College through my high school.
I first wanted to be a teacher when I was in high school. I was an aide for my math teacher and whenever he was absent I would step in and help students since the substitutes were never really able to help. It was then that I first experienced that AH HA moment that makes teaching worthwhile. I enjoy watching students comprehend something they previously didn't think they would ever understand.

I assess where they are at, what they need, and what they already know. I use what they already know and understand and build on that as I help them. I expect students to not rely on me giving them answers, but instead spend time helping them get to the answer with them providing me with information and what they think the next step is in a problem. This increases learning and retention.
