About Ashlyn

I have been a tutor and nanny for over three years, while studying to be an Elementary teacher at the University of South Carolina. In that time, I have been with several families, most of them for years. This allowed me to build a strong relationship and connection with both the children and their family. Before I was hired as a tutor, I volunteered my time in schools, assisting children with their reading. The first child I taught how to read was very shy and behind in her grade. As we worked together, her reading improved and her confidence grew. She became more excited to read, more enthusiastic with her peers, and even seemed to walk a little taller. Her teacher was on maternity leave within those two months and when she came back to the school, she told me that she did not even recognize her student. She also notified me that several other teachers took notice as well. I realized that I not only had a passion for teaching children how to read, but a talent for it as well. When my volunteer time with the school came to a close, I decided to pursue a career in tutoring for families. The first family that hired me was looking for assistance for online learning. I navigated Zoom meets, online activities, and assignments for the children. I spent extra time with the youngest to teach her how to read. She was so excited to learn and was always using what we learned in her day to day life, such as trying to read her snack packaging and papers throughout the house. In three months, it was time for the five year old to take her state standard test, who had previously not known how to read at all. Unassisted, she scored in the 99th percentile and her results came back with reading scores equivalent to a fourth grade level.

However, I also know that all students are not going to be as enthusiastic to learn as others. This past year and a half I have worked with a family that has an older daughter that experiences physical pain in her day to day life. During my time there, she has learned positive coping skills and is very independent in her work. The younger daughter had a very low attention span and had a difficult time focusing. She found it very hard to want to learn to read, so we made it something fun. She is active in dance and gymnastics and loves Legos. So, we practice her sight words by spelling them out with jumping jacks or simple dance moves. We also practiced words and sounds, by having written them on the lego pieces so she can build words and sentences.

This is what sets my services apart: I know that not every way of learning may seem "conventional," but what child is? My goal is to find a student's success with them in a way that promotes learning for their own individual self.
