About Zane

I tutored friends throughout secondary school and worked at summer schools. I also worked in my church's youth groups in high school and have a lot of experience working with preteens and teenagers.

I have ADHD and OCD, and so I love to help bright kids who struggle with distractions or uncreative learning methods achieve success by unlocking their intelligence.

I graduated high school summa cum laude with an IB diploma, scored 1470 on the SAT, and am currently working towards a double major in Urban Studies and International & Area Studies at New College of Florida. I won the award for Social Studies student of my high school's graduating class. I am also excellent at preparing for college-level exams like AP and IB exams, having won the AP Scholar with Distinction Award and passing all of my IB exams (with a 6 in English, Chemistry, and Math, and a 7 in History).

I last worked at a busy Starbucks in the SRQ airport. However, I want to do more than make coffee; I want to help kids who don't learn like everyone else, but have just as much potential as the brightest of their peers.

I've taught casually before and volunteered at summer school, but I'm starting now because I am passionate about helping kids.

Beyond knowing the material, I worked with kids at summer schools when I was in middle school, often helping students older than me. I also conducted study groups with my friends and anyone else who wanted my help in high school, since that was the best way for me to learn. Also in middle school, I worked with my teachers to help them create study guides that I knew would help my fellow students better than the ones the teacher made. I generally did this with geography and history topics.

I also worked with youth groups kids at my church for six years. I learned how to excite the bored, comfort the frustrated, and focus the distracted.

About the lesson

The very first thing I am going to do is get to know them. Simultaneously, I want to know how much they know, what they feel comfortable with, so that we can build on it. Learning requires confidence. Once we know where we are, and I understand how they learn, we can start looking at what is giving us a hard time. I know what it's like to stare at a problem and feel totally helpless and confused. But, despite that overwhelming feeling, most of the time, all that's needed is a push and a little bit of confidence. Giving my students confidence is the number one goal.

If they are very far behind or need a more comprehensive lesson, then they're going to dread our meeting. I know that's how I felt with tutors. So, without making them feel like children, I'm going to get them excited to learn and feeling confident. One of my talents is making metaphors. When a monument of confusing material stands in front of a student, it can feel insurmountable because it is unknowable. By translating the outline of the lesson into familiar terms, it will feel much less intimidating.

I have worked with middle school and high school students, and have experience with kids with learning disabilities.
