About Cynthia

My highly tailored approach and 26 years of tutoring experience enable me to provide both a positive learning atmosphere and results [average SAT increase: 200 points, average ACT increase: 4.5 points, typical grade improvement: 1-2 full letter grades (such as a B to an A or a C- to an A-)].

After winning 1st place in PA in math competitions, I served as the Assistant Coach for Germantown Friends School's MathCounts team. In that capacity, I taught small math classes and offered one-on-one help to students. From there, I began private tutoring and discovered the efficacy of tailoring my instruction to each individual learner. After graduating as the top student in my major (microbiology), I began tutoring science and test prep as well.

My academic expertise and personable teaching style, coupled with my 26 years of private tutoring experience and my work in the test prep industry, enable me to provide effective and engaging instruction. I get to know each student's learning style, personality, areas of academic difficulty, and strengths so that I can target areas of weakness while capitalizing on each student's strengths.

In addition to my academic work, I have been playing piano for 39 years (20 of them professionally as a jazz pianist & bandleader). I enjoy teaching piano lessons (beginner classical, beginner/intermediate jazz, beginner/intermediate blues, and beginner/intermediate pop/rock), as well as music theory & arranging, particularly in a jazz context.

In addition to my work as a tutor, I write practice SAT and ACT questions and answer explanations for a test prep company, and so I am very familiar with the types of questions and answer choices on those tests, as well as the content and strategies needed to ace the tests.

Unlike many tutors who are only now transitioning to online platforms due to the coronavirus, I have years of experience tutoring online.

Perfect! We could not have asked for a better trigonometry tutor for our son. Ms. Helzner provides updates after every session to both students and parents, making us feel very much a part of the process plus she responds to all our questions and concerns in a timely manner. We are now midway through the semester and our son has maintained an "A" average. We will definitely look forward to working with her again in the future!
